But it was during her rotation in microbiology that she found her true calling. | By JOANNE MacDONALD | The Manche.er, England native, who arrived in B.C. in 1969, has been the Lions Gate Hospital's original medical microbiologist since 1976. “It was rather nice to go into a situation where you ‘were the. first person and hopefully you could make a bit of an impact,'’ says Clarke, . . She is. responsible for the laboratory methods _ “used. _Which: ‘test: specimens : from it fter ‘the.’ m: ‘the: icy ) for sensitivity to an biotics 2. ‘ tibiotics. -—- primarily - beta-lactam antibiotics. — ’ which include the penicillins. © which type of antibiotic they're sensitive to is an im- portant part of microbiology.” Clarke works closely with the LGH pharmacy in deciding which antibiotics are to be carried by the hospital. As far as the clinical side of her work is concerned, Clarke is often consulted as to which an- tibiotics should be used on infected patients, in view of what bacteria is being _ grown, And as chairman of the infection control commmit- ’ tee, Clarke is aiso concerned _ “with the spread of infection ‘within the hospital. -.On the research side, the “microbiologist has’. been mainly involved with . an- the ‘They? te very good an- tibiotics in that you can give shigh doses. to patients -without problems of toxici- ty.. So once you have a new antibiotic, a lot of things have to happen. It has to go out all over the world in different hospitals and be tested against bacteria in different coun- tries, in different institu- tions,"* she says. “In addition to that, you have to do toxicity fests in animals and once it's been shown to be both effective and safe, they also have to look at the pharmacology of it and see whether you can get good levels in the serum, whether it penetrates into other body fluids, such as SEPARATION-DIVORCE MEDIATION The cest elfective alternative to court directed settlements of tamily property, maintenance and child support.
