LGH'S FIRST MICROBIOLOGIST

Antibiotics is her specialty

WHEN DR. Alison Clarke first came to Canada,
she fully intended to enter general pathology. But
it was during her rotation in microbiology that

she found her true calling.

native, who arrived in B.C.
in 1969, has been the Lions
Gate Hospital's original
medical microbiologist since
1976. “It was rather nice to
go into a situation where you

the LGH pharmacy in
deciding which antibiotics
are to be carried by the
hospital. As far as the
clinical side of her work is
concerned, Clarke is often
consulted as to which an-
tibiotics should be used on
infected patients, in view of
what bacteria is being

animals and once it's been
shown to be both effective
and safe, they also have to
look at the pharmacology of
it and see whether you can
get good levels in the serum,
whether it penetrates into
other body fluids, such as
