C6-Wednesday, June 4, 1980 - North Shore News More on those Aussie animals The aviary is a pleasure for bird lovers — hundreds of species, most tame enough to take food from your hand. Beware of the cockatoos — they bite! Picnic tables and barbeque pits are provided for visitors to use at lunchtime but the park closes at 5 p.m. so don't plan on having dinner. The other sanctuary, Lone Pine, is near Brisbane. You can get there by road but a nicer way is a cruise down the Brisbane River from Hales Wharf. You can spend a full or half day and have lunch or a snack at the park. The snack bar sells delicious hot scones with strawberries and whipped cream that team up nicely with tea. Here, too, you can cuddle a gentle koala and feed the “roos”. Dried corn is available in packages for 25‘ and the kangaroos, deer and birds all go giddy over it. A word of warning about these kangaroos! They have no patience with anyone holding a bag of corn and not distnbuting Wt promptly. | was down on my _ knees trying to feed a Uny “joey” who was poking his face out of tis Mommy's pouch A large male kangaroo figured he was getting shortchanged The bi By DON WOODBURY Actually sts a big blowout On the second weekend tn Augusl every year for the last 460, (he town ts flying for three days Ome Concession to drying outas that they do chose the bars from 2 am te 6 MW am If down you wanted a home foot stomipan vyahootn good Cowboy tune Omak was the place to be Aug LO t? The deer are timid but will be hand-fed if you can figure out a way to chase away the flock of kangaroos. Emus — huge ostriches — are a bit scary. Who needs a five-foot tall beak a few inches from your only pair of glasses? They snatch kernels of corn from your hand and leave the skin intact. While we were strolling around the Lone Pine, a hideous chorus of howling started. Dingos! These wild dogs have a pack affibation and if one starts singing, the others join in. They are magnificent — big tan and white dogs with large pointed ears and intelligent faces. Reminded me _ of Alberta praime coyotes only bigger and prouder. The animal sanctuaries are such an improvement over zoos. As a “certified animal nut”, I hate to see beasts in cages. Wherever possible, I want all the kangaroo spit and koala piddle, I'm enntled to when I visit an animal farm. The Melbourne Zoo is excellent, as zoos go. Although you can't pet or feed any of the residents, they do have an excellent selection of game — both native Austrahan and other. Id never seen a_ giraffe before and the Melbourne Zoo has them, as well as lions, elephants, gorillas and all sorts of other exotc beasts. Their aviary is enormous and you can walk through with no problems other than vanous bird droppings from a height. I have an excellent for Australia kangaroos are pests (they eat the stock fodder), the government should sell them as pets to crazy North Amencans who would love to combination idea Since considered have a lawn mower and jogger Companion DDUGUDENQDDNGNUVGUAVONSOQDUGSDUSNOQOOGNOGNOOOONEOONDOOGNOROADEQONANOONUONOSUOLOOOSIONOSUONIIONNIS = . = = Fresh Fruit = Our season has Okenagen Groves = = opened andwe = = are back in full = = swing witha = = variety of fruit = = at reasonable = = prices. : = = Wosk’s parking lot = = = 1050 Marine Dr., N.V. = = FARMER’S MARKET z = United Fruit Growers = TOVUAUUNUNAUENUNUEAUADUGLADELODLUNGONOUNUNSUNGQGANUONGAGACOONEGCUDUNAOUSSANOUNUNOOCHOOUOACEAUNGIATTT KITCHENS VANITIES COUNTERTOPS APPLIANCES CERAMIC TILE sess 106 West 3rd St North Van .B C ' Pnone 984-9741 DEALER FOR Now offering Formica $4 999° Tub Enclosures- Installed Thinking of replacing your countertops? ‘‘Call us’ Nave Drerercr capepmerearinscy ans Thee NE VSS foo Vereen cae.
