By Surj Rattan News Reporter Kyong and Alice Kim, owners of Seycove Marina Ltd., located ait 2890 Panoraina Dr., are at- tempting to rezone a portion of “their 17-acre (6.8 hectare) site from parks, recreation and other -uses (PRO) to a form of residen- ” tial zoning. Area resident. Trevor Carolan said over 200 residents had signed a petition opposing the redevelopment scheme and the Kims' request to North Vancouver ‘District Council that a public in- formation meeting on the issue be waived. , ’. But Kyong Kim said he and his wife only want to build ‘three homes on part of the site. The ~ money generated would be used to. repair the marina. Kim added ‘that the only reason “. he asked that a public information mecting on the issue. be waived was because work needs to be - done immediately at the marina,” before: the arrival of the fall and : winter weather. He also denied Carolan’s charge that his redevelopment proposal calls for blasting through a nearby hillside to make room for an ac- cess road. Kim dismissed Carolan’s claim that the redevelopment proposal would result in increased traffic in the area. “Our plan was to sell the (redeveloped) area and put the money into the marina. The only way I can do that is through self-financing. “This is our home and we have done our best to fit into the com- munity. There will be no blasting of trees needed,”’ said Kim. Kim also showed the News sev- eral letters of support he has received for his redevelopment proposal. He said the plan was first brought to the district in February. In a letter to district council, Terry Sanderson of the Commuter Marina Liaison group said: ‘‘The Kim family have fit well into the community. They have put in a great amount of effort to make improvements within their means such as repair on the commuter dock and the installation of the breakwater. - “We feel they had Deep Cove’s best interest at heart. when . they made their proposal. Caro! Ward-Hall, program coordinator. for .North Van- couver’s Emily Murphy transition house, said the facility has been underfunded for a long time. The local transition house receives 64% of its funding from the provincial government. It’ also receives grants from the three North Shore municipalities. In any given year, said Ward- Hall, between 30% and 35% of the women who come to the Emily Murphy transition house come from the North Shore and the Howe Sound and Pemberton areas while a further 65% to 70% will come from the Greater Vancouver area. ’ Meanwhile Tory candidate Will McMartin, who is running against Jaffer in the federal North Van- couver riding, praised the report and said he liked the diverse makeup of the panel.
