34 - North Shore News — Friday, November 24, 2000 Paré scores pol a Canad JESSICA Paré is bummed. Ail the media attention gen- erated by the Vancouver Film Festival premiere of Stardom meant she wasn’t able to surprise the West Coast branch of her family. Nineteen-year-old Paré hails from the sprawling East Coast Paré family, which has a family reunion of sorts cach sum- mer at their country house in the Laurentians. “It’s like, a wadition,” Paré says of the surprise- your-relatives thing. She’s nursing a can of Diet Coke at nine in the morning. “Once this guy from this coast, a semi-uncle kind of guy, swam from the pub- lic beach to our beach... just showed up and asked for directions till we realized who he was, He scored points for creativity with that one,” Paré says, describing her elaborate plot that was thwarted by a live Vancouver TV appearance. It will be difficult for Paré to hide anywhere these days. She's the star in Stardom, Denys Arcand’s new film, a look at the media feeding frenzy surrounding supermodels. The film opened in Vancouver last week. Paré's sudden embrace with fame parallels the meteoric rise to celebrity of her character, Tina, who goes from sriall-town hockey player to international supermodel in the click ofa shutter lens. Before Stardom Paré only had a few high school drama pro- ductions on her resume. Director Arcand auditioned “hundreds and hun- a dreds” of young women for the role of Tina in * Canada, the U.S. and France. He was giving up hope - when Jessica walked in to audition for a smaller role. “It was a God-given gift,” Arcand said of Paré’s audi- tion, “She was perfect.” -.- . ° . ~ Because she w was hired right be before shooting ublic Hearings are e scheduled for 700: - BM, TUESDAY, December 5, 2000: in the Council Chamber of the Municipal ‘ Hall, 355: West. She gets to fly all over the place and meet new cool people.” Paré co-starred with veteran actors Dan Ackroyd, Frank Langella and Robert LePage, all of whom were great to work with, she says. And Paré has only g good things to say about Areand, who helped make the novice actress feel secure on set. *He’s a wicked director. | couldn't have asked for anything more,” says Paré. In addition to a boyfriend, who worked on Stardom, Paré’s newfound fame is bringing people out of the wi ‘oodwork, “I have, like, a million best friends now,” says Jessica. “It's really cool, everyone wants to see me.” Paré was thrilled when she learned that Tine magazine had written about her, but “All they men- tioned was my boobs! They said I was “boob- acious.” My dad was so mad!” And she made CityTV in Toronto's 25 most beautiful people i in Canada list. “Gcez, I looked the same last year...” says Paré, in mock amazement. Paré shot Lost and Delirious in the Spring with Piper Perabo (Covore Ugly) and Mischa Barton “the puking girl from Sixth Sense,” Paré reminds me. She: has also added Randon: Passage to her credits.
