The 18-year-old Burnaby gymnast has been named to the National gymnastics team that will represent Canada at the Summer Games starting in Sydney, Australia this week. The entire 22-member squad ~- including the seven-mem- ber senior women’s artistic team of which Léveillé is an integral part — was unveiled at a press conference held at Playdium in * Burnaby recently. The team had just broken an intensive week-long training camp in Calgary and pitstopped in B.C. only briefly before con- tinuing on to New Zealand for one fast training camp. Thev’ve certainly got the credentials to bring home some heavy hardware from the Games: it’s the same squad that defeated the Americans to claim the gold at the Pan Am Games last year in Winnipeg. Ase pected, Léveillé said she’s excited but still biting her fin- gernails in anticipation. “I think everybody's nervous and everyone's feeling the pressure,” she said. Léveillé, who has been taining and competing with North Vancouver's Flicka Gymmnastics for 15 years, will tackle the bal- ance beam and compete in the floor exercise at the Games. To Léveillé’s credit count a bronze medal in beam at the Moscow Stars of the World competition; a first team placement at the Canada vs. USA challenge in North York; a first place in beam, second place in floor and third place in vault and bars at the Canadian Championships in Burnaby; the Pan Am Games Gold, of course; and an Olympic team qualification at the world championships i in Tianjin, China. And that’s just last year alone. . Léveillé is coached by Celestina Popa, Flaviu Toma and Nancy Beyer. Beyer will make the trek to the Land Dow! n Onder as Léveille’s personal coach. Also at the conference was former Flicka head coach Gladys Hartley, who for 13 years helmed the fledgling team while it was in its infaney i in the 1960s and early °70s. Louise Hemingway started the club in 1961, one year after she competed as a gymnast at the Rome Olympics. Hartley’s daughter, Sandra, was one of another three Flicka members that have made Olympic appearances through the years. She vied for the gold at the Mexico City Games in 1968. North Shore natives Anita Botnen and Karen Kelsall also com- peted in past Games under the Flicka banner. Now, it’s Léveillé’s turn. “I think she'll do well,” said Gladys. “She’s been hitting pretty steady and lately I don’t think she’s injuted, so that makes a big difference.” Léveillé had sustained a toe injury ‘earlier this year which had . hampered her perfor- mance. ability, but Beyer said she’s back in top form. “She was a little behind in her training because of the injury but ‘she’s right back’ where she’s supposed to be. The last few days ia Calgary were fan- tastic. I’ve never seen her bet- ter.”. Léveillé gives herself a clean bill of health as well. “Once in a while I geta little bit of pain but it’s nothin that holds me back,” she sai Part of the New Zealand sidelines * BACK to the Grindstone. While she'd like the team to medal at the Garis, she remains realistic. “I think our goal is to go in there and have personal bests for. . everybody. All the competitors will be at their peak. It’ come down to who can do the best job.”.. If you like seeing Léveillé in action at. the Games, don’t get used to it — she said this will be her one’ and only attempt to mount the podium.
