Whistler hosts festival THE fourth annual Canadian Mountain Festival takes place next weekend in Whistler. The two-day event, Nov. 27-28 at the Chateau Whistler, features evening showings of the best films from the recent Banff Mountain Film Festival. On Saturday night, follow- ing an hour-and-a-half of films, the second annual Mountaineers’ Soiree kicks of F in the Chateau’s ballroom. The Association of Canadian Mountain Guides’ (ACMG) event includes silent and rain- bow auctions. Funds raised during the ‘evening will go to the Brian Ebert Memorial Scholarship Fund, a fund established by friends of Ebert, a guide who died in the mountains in 1995, According to fund director Jim Haberl, the idea behind the Mountaineers’ Soiree is three fold: to raise money for the scholarship fund; to raise public awareness of the ACMG. And, “to gather as many members of the moun- tain community together and have a great night,” stated Haberl, accomplished guide and author. “Last year’s event was a great party and we accomplished all of those objectives. “We are hoping for a regeat in 1998.” Haber! said considering the $12,000 in auction items up for grabs this year, he expects another good showing. “We have helicopter skiing, helicopter and fixed wing flight time, a backcountry chalet ski holiday, Goretex jackets, dryloit sleeping bags, backpacks, custom guiding, ropes, climbing equipment, ski equipment, original art- work and a long list of other items,” he said.
