Gemini awards honour Canada’s hest CANADIAN television is something of a lame duck forever cursed to fly under the shadow of the giant American eagle, right? Certainly Canadian television programming fits that populist theory on many nights, but that does not mean the Canadian television industry as. a whole is bad, or even boring. The best of it deserves con- gratulation that it can be as good as it is on so (com- paratively) little money. Sunday night at 8 p.m. on CBC (Yes, there's a reason for a national network!) the best of our home-grown industry takes centre stage at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to celebrate achievements and honour each other in the 13th Gemini Awards gala. Last week the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television hosted a reception for the western Gemini nominees. If Curtain Call counted correctly there are 57 of them, of whom 50 are from this province and cight (that we know of) from the North Shore — a respectable figure given thar most of the shooting done in these parts heads south, while Toronto remains Canada’s capital for the television industry. One of the highlights of the reception at The Creek restau- rant on Granville Island was a compilation of clips that featured the work of all the nominees. Put cogether courtesy of BCTV and WIC Entertainment Ltd., the video silenced the crowded room in a way that the introductory speeches were unable to do. It was a 20-minute tour past some outstanding work that jumped right off the monitors and demanded attention even without context. Many of the clips garnered spontancous applause with The Sleep Room and Cold Squad clearly crowd favourites. Sunday’s televised awards gala will be hosted by Thick and Thin stand-up comics Ronnie Edwards and Kenny Robinson.
