Dr. Gloria Mary Smith .
Teacher passes on

AFTER A busy life of teaching throughout Canada and the
world, Dr. Gloria Mary Smith, B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. of
Glenaire Drive passed away November 10, in her 63rd year.

She was the beloved wife of Dr.
Colin Smith, with whom she
taught and. travelled since their
marriage in 1951.

Cy Baker, Chief of the Capilano
Band, played the drums at the
funeral service which was held
November 16 at First Memorial
Services in Vancouver.

The Smiths met in 1950 when
they were teaching at a high
school at Dawson Creek, Mile 0
along the Alaska Highway.

Three years later they were off
to London to teach, returning to
B.C. as counsellors at a Grand
Forks school.

They then taught at North
Kamloops Junior High, before it
was burned to the ground by
celebrating students, followed by
Vietoria Senior High and Mount-
view Senior High in Victoria.

For three years they were ad-

visors for the Canadian gov-
ernment at a school in Sarawak,
Borneo. Mrs. Smith, who was an
A.R.C.T. music teacher, was head
of the music department.
:. After a stint in midwestern
Nigeria, the Smiths returned to
B.C. where Gloria earned her
masters at UBC. Then the couple
went south to Michigan to work on
their. doctorates in International
Development.

They. worked in Jamaica at the
World Bank - Secondary - School,

and then came back to Canada
where Dr. Colin Smith became the
executive director at U.B.C.’s In-
ternational House.

In 1973, they both received their
Ph.D.s. But unable to secure a
local position, Dr. Gloria Smith
went to Manitoba as a travelling
professor for Brandon University
and to teach Cree Indians to be
teachers.

She also provided teacher train-
ing to the Crees and Inuit at the
James Bay Project for the Univer-
sity of Quebec.

It was back in B.C. that Dr.
Gloria Smith taught at Dorset Col-
lege and contracted multiple scle-
rosis, which forced her to retire in
1985.

Cancer also contributed to.. her
death in November.

Although they weren’t home
very often, the Smiths eventually
purchased their Glenaire home in
1966. Dr. Smith continues to live
there with a Chinese artist Dao
Ping Bao, whom Gloria taught to
speak Engli glish.

- Dr. Smith is survived by her
brothers, Larry Burroughs and
family: of .Powell River, Kenneth
Burroughs and family of Van-
couver and sister-in-law, Betty

: Burroughs and family of Victoria. .

In lieu of flowers, donations to
the S.P.C.A.’s ‘Tanya Fund”
(named after the late Dr. Smith’s
favorite cat) would be appreciated.
