6 - Sunday, May 12, 1991 - North Shore News NEWS VIEWPOINT Port in a storm ODAY’S Port Day '91 celebrations present an opportunity for North Shore residents to mix some business with pleasure. Festivities include free harbor tours leav- ing from North Van City’s Waterfront Park and tours through the adjacent Pacific Marine Training Institute. But apart from all the celebration, resi- dents should take a good long look at the operations of the majer players that make up the industrial North Shore waterfront. They range from shipyards to bulk-loading terminals to railways, and they represent the industrial heart of Vancouver’s port. The North Shore port makes up over 50% of major Vancouver port facilities, including its only coal terminal, two of its five major grain terminals, all of its major shipyards and virtually all of its major forest products terminals. And while it may not all be pretty, local waterfront industry is as vital to the conti- nuing social and financial well-being of the North Shore as are its commercial and recreational components. The future of the North Vancouver waterfront is currently the subject of much debate. Thus far we have managed to mix harbor industry, residential and park uses with a relative lack of friction. But the decline of Versatile Pacific Shipyards means decision-makers must now grapple with the question of what type of land use will follow the industrial concern. The question may well come down to a choice of jobs versus condos. But the con- tinued buoyancy of the local economy would best be served by reserving the land for industrial use. “Surviving.”” Horseshoe Bay marina Dan Sewell, on his biggest achieve- ment. “The people want to get to the water, and the way to get there is through the imarina...in B.C., marinas are closing down, some are being turned into con- dominiums, and Mother Nature's not creating any more bays.
