Winner of the Provincial Cup Championship for four con- secutive years, the Selects were cautiously optimistic going to Nova Scotia. “I was very optimistic about how we would do, but at that level it’s very tough,” Macey said. Yet at half time the Selects were down 2-0. Macey said the team had a “couple of mental lapses”’ in the first half. ‘‘We regrouped at haif time and came out a totally dif- ferent team.’’ Seven minutes into the second half Macey’s son, Scott found the net with an assist from midfielder Simon Tate. The Selects continued to put on Pressure, undeterred by a disallowed goal. The break came when striker Jeff Hart broke into Ontario’s penalty area and was fouled by the goalkeeper. Mendela Sibiya took the penalty shot, earning the Selects the na- tional title. Lee Macri said the Selects’ phys- ical condition, built by three prac- tices a week, helped the local squad triumph in overtime. “This is kind of embarrassing, but I was so happy I was crying,” Macri said. Macey has bsen coaching the Selects for 11 years. His son and Mark Braithwaite are original team members and the majority of the team has been on the roster for the past eight years.
