8 - Sunday, August 27, 1989 - North Shore News POLLUTION PROBE Hunter's attack on employees Dear Editor: Bob Hunter’s attack on the unionized employees of Pollution Probe in his column of July 12 is short-sighted, and, considering his cushy job as an intellectual and scribe, patronizing and cowardly. The ecology movement does not have to atiack working people to survive. This is a lesson Greenpeace could sorely stand to learn. In the United States, its callous attitude to its employees has led the organization to pay its telemarketers poorly, to deprive them of reasonable benefits, and to force them to work under nasty Little protection against monopoly Dear Editor: Here we go again. In July of 1988 Shaw Cable dinged us all for several totally unwanted cable channels, from which they increas- ed their revenue by $13.08 per year, plus government taxes, from every subscriber. I complained to the CRTC and Shaw Cable, but to no avail. And then there was the in- genious attempt, more recently, to bill extra channels unless you said *“no’’ very loudly. Having suc- ceeded so easily before with a gull- ible public, why not again? So now we have another CBC news channel 24 hours a day at a cost of $6.48 plus 11 per cent tax. Were we asked whether we wanted TV news 24 hours a day? Of course not. There are other increases too, but we can expect a little protec- tion from the CRTC against this cable monopoly. Past experience Students were not tardy Dear Editor: The article in the June 28 North Shore News about the science fair winners stated that the three Coll- ingwood students were not eligible for the science fair prizes because they missed the entry date. This was not the case. My three Grade 5 students were given special permission by the science fair or- ganizers to participate as ‘exhib- itors’ because entries and prizes are usually restricted to Grade 6 stu- dents and up. The three students, David Stiles, Ryan Klingmann and Jaime Tiam- po, were delighted to spend extra time in preparing and displaying their projects even though they knew they would not be eligible for awards, But maybe next year...! As a result, Greenpeace employees are busy forming a union to fight the robber baron attitudes of the eco-managers. If the ecology movement is go- ing to hire people, it should pay them a decent wage. Uniike Mr. Hunter, the Green movement in Europe takes a much more radical and logical position when it argues that we must stop oppressing workers and stop rap~ ing the environment. After all, the Nazis were good on environmental issues. When I mct him nearly 20 years ago, Mr. Hunter used to disguise his liberalism with a patina of rad- icalism; now he disguises his con- servatism with a patina of ecology. Now, as then, he needs to think a little more carefully and realize that there are many battles to be fought at oncz; we need not sacri- fice working people on the altar of the environment.
