CHEF GIOVANNI ASKS YOU TO 15 - Friday, April 24, 1987 - North Shore News Local rock group promises energy THE NORTH Vancouver metal band Nitevigil will play the Town Pump on April 27. “I'd like to say we're original sounding but there’s always cliches,’’ said vocalist Phil English, 18. ‘‘We're hard rock; it’s music that's high energy.”’ Formed in high school and together for the past two years, Nitevigil has just finished recordi- ng a four-song EP, State of Emergency, due to appear in June. “We started off doing talent shows and stuff,’ he recalled. “Our big break came at Spotlight "85 — out of the 400 bands we * were picked for the top 18. “We ended up finishing up third -overall in that (local talent showcase).”’ Two earlier television spots on CBC and CKVU are now a source of much hilarity and amusement with members Chris Wright, Kris Ellis, Robyn Hughes and English. Despite the band members’ self-declared hard rack label, Nitevigil does not want to be dub- bed a heavy metal group. ‘I don’t like to be classed as heavy metal,” said English. ‘‘We’re more of a classy act than trashy or raunchy. “‘We’ve opened up the metal scene in North Van.
