{Doug Collins @ get this straight @ IF BILL Vander Zalm has any sense he will stick to his original hunch and stay away from this free lunch for “hungry kids” stuff. Because it’s all a lot of nonsense. And even if it were not a lot of nonsense, what are parents for but to look after their kids themselves? To argue against the state feeding ‘‘hungry kids’’ is to lay oneself open to the Scrooge bit, of course. (‘‘Are there no workhouses? Are there no pris- ons?’’) But there is absolutely no reason for any child in B.C. to go | short of a meal, government or no government. Parents who let their kids go hungry deserve to have them | taken away from them. But to set up a free lunch system in the schools because some parents are bums is ludicrous, Yet that is what chairman of the Vancouver School Board says he will do. How silly can you get? Anyone who has been through 4 a war in which food was in short supply will know what I am talk- ing about. Vander Zalm himself put it well. He pointed out that he grew up in hungry Holland during the war. His mother had seven children to look after, yet he | cannot remember ever going without a meal. So why should local children? " Rations weren’t exactly wonderful in the U.K., either. People got one egg a week (when they. were available) two ounces of cheese, and so on. But no one went hungry. On the contrary, British health improved. During the siege of Leningrad, where tens of thousands did die of starvation, many parents were the first to go because they gave what they had to the youngsters. That’s what being a parent means. There is no siege here (except the siege put on by the loonies) and no rationing, either. So any .parent whose child is not getting three squares is either wasting the money on booze or the horses. It is interesting to watch how these fusses come into being. In this case a school principal went to the media. There were some children in his school, he said, who had no lunch. It was one of those. things made for the media. Headlines blossom: ‘‘Hungry Kids In Van- couver!”’ Ten minutes later the NDP is squawking like mad over in the legislature. Vander Zalm is dragged into the story. Doesn’t he know there are hungry kids about? Ain’t this pretty close to the situation in “Ethiopia? What is he going to do about it? Most ruling politicians would have taken the easy way out, A Dave Barrett would have said the government was going to supply the schools with top-flight mi- crowaves right away. Mike Har- court and Bob Skelly would simi- larly have fallen over themselves to do good, Before we knew where we were, every school in the pro- vince would have been on a free lunch program. Rich, middling, poor, it would have made no dif- ference. We mustn't discriminate, That’s how these things hap- pen. Federally, for instance, there's all this poppycock about how vital it is for governinent to set up day-care centres. The NDP began that fool- ishness. Then the Liberals started « howling for the same thing. Fi- nally, the Tories jumped onto the bandwagon, they having neither guts nor brains. ‘If it costs a few billion more dollars, who cares? To the cliff, lemmings. It’s the: same with food banks. They toc were a socialist enter- prise, even though a voluntary one. I’m not saying that the food banks should not exist. I am say- ing that if freebies of any kind are available you are going ‘td have a lot of customers whether or not those freebies are needed. The very existence of the food banks has now become an accus- ing finger pointed at ‘‘uncaring government’’ — even though the same uncaring government spends billions on welfare. Stick to your guns, Slam. If there are hungry kids in this pro- vince, tell the Ministry of Human | Resources to get off its butt and go after the parents. Shore: News WV SCHOOL BOARD Trustee opposes move From page 8 pushed through the — legislature without adequate consultation, But board member Margot Furk, who opposed the motion, said she thought the government had done much consultation. She said both the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Schoo! Trustees Association have made Numerous presentations to the board in the last few years on labor legislation changes they wanted, and the labor ministry had community inectings around the province just last fall. Furk said she might support the motion if it called for more con- sultation with the general public, father than with the affected CUSTOM DRAPERI organizations. Board member Michael Smith said the more time the government takes passing the legislation, the more time labor radicals have to “incite revolution." ‘Obviously the government had to do something.”’ Chairman Suart wanted to discuss the new labor legislation in the board’s closed session, but his request was overturned by the ether four board members. Suart said the discussion might hurt rela- tions with the board’s enployees. Furk said holding the discussion in-camera would do nothing to improve the district's labor rela- tions in the long-term.
