36 - Wednesday, March 25, 1987 - North Shore News Car care: select correct motor oil ONE OF THE easiest and mast important auto maintenance pro- cedures is changing your motor oil. . Equally important is the selec- tion of the right motor oil. Selecting the right motor oil is based on the type of car you are driving, how it is used, and the climate in which it is being driven. Todey’s most commonly recommended motor oils are 10W30 and 10W40, as well as 5W30 motor oils which are primarily recommended for newer and smaller (four and six cylinder engines) cars. Most motor oils have multi- viscosity, meaning they will per- form at both low and high Don’t ‘let the buyer have the car or the title until you. receive full pay- “ment./- To advertise: your car in a local newspaper, “use® as few words as ; postible in your ad. The ability of a par- ticular oil to perform at different temperatures is indicated by the “SAE” grade number on the label. For example, with 10W40 motor oil, the first number — 10W — indicates how well the oil flows at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the faster it flows in cold weather. - The second number, 40 refers to the characteristics of the oil in hot weather or at high ¢ngine operating temperature. The higher the grade the more protection it offers against high temperature wear. So, an SAE 10W40 motor oil gives the quick starting and ex- cellent low temperature lubrication and protection of an SAE 10W oil and the high temperature, anti- wear protection of an SAE 40 oil without changing grades of oil seasonally. , Finally, it just as important to regularly check that you have enough motor oil. Be sure to change your motor oil at or before the regular interval specified in the owner's manual provided by the manufacturer, and read the fine print for severe service driving, which includes short trips and ““stop-and-go driving. How much do you know about cars? “HOW OFTEN should the muf- fler bearings be lubricated?’’ ‘*Where does one add exhaust fluid?’ ‘How often should the air in your tires be changed?’’ “How hot can your engine get before it is considered overheated?”’ If you recognize the first three of the above as trick questions and are not sure about the answer to the fourth, you are like most of the 66 drivers tested by University of Michigan Trans- portation Research Institute’s Paul Green. Green’s goal was to determine how drivers might respond to various types of instrumentation being considered for cars of the future. His first step was to find out how much peopie know about the workings of their cars. He learned that most of the people in his test group did not know much about thei: car’s mechanical functions. Most of . them could not correctly answer questions about the operating temperature of their car’s engines or tell how ‘much. anti-freeze/ coolant their radiators held. WHY PAY MORE? If, you recognized the first three questions as tricks, and stated 250-275 degrees F as max- imum temperature before overheating, you’re ready for a few more legitimate questions from the Car Care Council about the cooling system: (1) For improved engine effi- ciency, cooling systems are pressurized. Normal range of pressure is 8 to 10 psi. True or false? (2) You’re stuck in a traffic jam on a hot day. Your car overheats. Until you can safely pull off the road to get help you should: 1) Close all the windows and turn oni the air conditioner to Maximum; 2) Open the windows and turn the heater. to its hottest setting with the fan on high; or 3) Turn on the headlights and emergency flashers. Choose one. (3) Cooling system heses. cir- culate up to: a) 500 gallons per hr.; b) 1,500 gallons per hr.; or c) 7,500 gallons per hour. ANSWERS TO CAR CARE QUIZ 1) False. Typical cooling system pressure ranges from 14 psi to 17 psi. The boiling point of coolant increases three degrees for every pound of increased pressure. The radiator cap, which regulates pressure, should be tested as part of seasonal cooling system maintenance. A weak pressure cap will cause coolant loss and engine overheating. 2) You’ll have to bear some discomfort to help your car through this crisis, says the Car Care Council. Turn off the air conditioner and turn on the heat. It will increase circulation of coolant, thereby helping dissipate engine heat. Also, shift the car to neutral whenever possible, and ‘“‘rev up”’ the engine to fast idle speed. 3) The answer is (c), 7,500 gallons per hour. Hoses must survive under-the-hood. temperatures of up to 280 degrees F and are subject to pressures nearing 18 psi. : WHAT'S STOPPING you?” CRAZY — DAVE... DOES IT AGAIN With - This Ad.
