Librarian honored House size ‘limited in NV District MEGA - dwellings are unwelcome in the residential areas of North Vancouver District. Council moved Monday to put a lid on the size of houses built on large, consolidated lots. “In Vancouver there is a case of three consolidated 50-foot lots with a 14-bedroom, 14-bathroom house on the property,’’ said municipal planner Kai Kreuchen, The proposed bylaw, to amend the 1965 district zoning bylaw, calls for maximum dwelling size on 465 square metre lots at 5,000 square feet; 3,500 square fect for 325-square metre lots; 2,507 square feet for 232-square metre sized Jots. Ald. Joan Gadsby said bylaw proposal was timely. “The tinie factor is crucial. the We're seeing, these monster houses even in cur community,”’ she said. But Ald. Mary Segal said there wasn’t enough information. “A few years ago we faced something similar. Developers from the business community got se upset, it didn’t proceed. We have to balance the rights of the people already in the community ‘with the rights of. “the person wishing to build.” ** 7 WEST VANCOUVER Council observed a moment of silence Monday night to honor the late Ruth Stott, the woman who played a major role in the development of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. He said the issue of police safety needs to be discussed, in light of the recent death of a Vancouver police officer. MacLean was quoted in a North Shore News ar- ticle Feb. 6 as saying something should be done about the use of police radio scanners by criminals. The Vancouver officer was killed after being shot during « raid on the home of a suspected drug dealer who owned a scanner. MacLean suggested that perhaps a fund-raising effort should be made in order to equip local police with a private communication system. Interviewed recently, MacLean said after talking with police of- ficials he agrees a fund-raising ef- fort may not be the best route. ‘Maybe we can knock on the doors of our MPs and look into general safety issues. I don’t want to see what happened in Van- couver happen over in North Van- couver,” he said. Citizens United for Safety and Justice will meet next month, but a definite time and date has not yet been made. role in the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.
