The manager of the West Van Odeon, where the popular movie is being shown, was told by Mayor Derrick Humphreys last week to do something about the long line-ups for the film or the mayor would take matters into his own hands. One possible action men- tioned was charging people waiting with loitering. Local merchants were upset at the line-ups because their customers couldn't get into the stores, Humphreys told the News. Theatre manager Ken Ball and Humphreys met Monday and resolved the dispute, Ball said. The mayor admitted that theatre patrons had a right to use the sidewalk, and Ball will try to do something about the problems the line-ups cause. This includes having patrons line up in a municipally-owned lane near the Odeon called Theatre Lane. Though the problem was supposedly caused by complaining. merchants, -Store. owners in the 1500 ‘block. Marine Drive had mixed feelings about the movie line-ups when con- tacted by the News. - ‘Some:.complained about littering and blocked en- tranceways, but others saw no problem. One even said the movie's popularity was beneficial. Ball said he is trying to contact all the nearby merchants to try to work out the problems that exist. | Glenn Warren, who owns a stationary shop near the theatre said people in the line-ups throw litter and smear milkshakes on his windows. His business hasn't been affected otherwise because he closes at 5:30 pm. daily and E.T. doesn’t start until 7. Two merchants, Mike McCusken of the Patio Shop, and. Margaret Roder of the Town and. Village Shop, had no complaints. . . People break the movie ‘line-ups to get into his store anyway; said McCusken, while Roder considered the movies good for business. Many people come to the store because. they. saw something they liked in the window while waiting for the movie to start, she said. . The major problem ‘was with the Esso station on the Theatre janitors try to ff clean up litter in front of the stores daily, Ball said. Chuck Willett, manager of Shoppers Drug Mart, said the problem isn’t confined to E.T. Whenever a_ really popular movie plays at the Odeon people block the entrance and park illegally in the Shoppers lot. Because Shoppers is open until 9, Willett gets the effect of both the 7 p.m. and 9:15 shows.
