B11 - Sunday, July 11, 1982 - North Shore News -(UPI)U.S. automakers, who tried to lure car buyers to showrooms in June without major incentive programs, posted the worst June sales figures in nearly 25 years. The plunge followed a May sales increase, the first of the model year, and fueled speculation General Motors Corp. would in- stitute some kind of sales promotion to salvage _ summer sales. Total June sales were 647,340 compared to 721, 939 for June of 1981. A decline of 11 per cent when Japan agrees to Canadian car talks TOKYO (UPI) - Japan and Canada have agreed to hold working level talks in Ottawa in mid-July in an attempt to break a _ stalemate over Japanese car exports to the Canadian market. Ministry of International Trade and Industry officials said Japan would ask Canada in the Ottawa talks to ex- pedite import procedures that have stranded about 10,000 Japanese vehicles in Vancouver. The two countmes are at odds over volume _ of Japanese car imports this year. Canada insists Japanese automobile imports this year be limited at 146,000 units, down 16 per cent from last year, while Japan demands the ceiling be maintained at last year’s level of 174,000 Vol.! units. The officials charged Canadian customs officials deliberately delay the procedures to back up Canada’s demand for cur- tailment of Japanese car imports. Canadian officials claim Japanese exports of passenger cars and com- mercial vehicles are hurting national auto and related industries. Japan contends that voluntary curbs on car exports to Canada are aimed mainly at preventing Japanese vehicles shut_out from the U.S. market to be diverted to the Canadian market. Japanese auto makers have agreed to limit their shipments of new cars to the U.S. this year at last year’s level of 1.68 million units.
