The words come
from Judy Bagshaw in a rush of
enthusiasm as she sits surrounded
by her watercolors in the sun-
splashed living room of her Dun-
darave home.

How did the busy Bagshaw
become one of the North Share’s
leading painters? How did she get
started; who inspired her; and
what advice does she have for
budding artists?

It was the artistic environment of
her childhood that nurtured
Bagshaw’s young talent — when
she was four, her mother sent one
of Judy’s whimsical drawings to an
American children’s magazine,
which published it. Her sculptor
mother and stockbroker father
surrounded their four kids with a

believed that, before you develop
your original style, you’ve got to
have a solid grounding in the
basics, in the techniaues, You can

Bagshaw married in 1961, while
working as a denial assistant and
secretary, and developed her tal-
ent through courses ai the West
Vancouver Recreation Centre.
After raising three now-grown
children — her youngest, son Jay,
24, is a potter -- she got her first
big break by winning first prize for
“Deep Cove” at a Presentation
House jurying.
