friends already put up with
the tackiness of a typed fet-
ter, instead of one chat is
handwritten. The problem
is, they almost never receive
letters from me, handwritten
or otherwise, because I sim-
ply don't have time to write
everyone with any regularity.

Isn't it better for them to
at least receive a letter, even
if everyone is getting the
same one? After all, it's not
exactly like photocopying. I
can add things to individual
letters and make changes
that will personalize each
one.

Actually, | wili probably
go ahead with this plan. I
just want to know if | am
playing fast and loose with
the rules of etiquette as I do.

GENTLE READER. —
This is the old mimeograph-
ed Christmas letter argu-
ment, brought up to date,
and Miss Manners feels
obliged to warn you that for
everyone who defends mass
mailings, more people are
offended by them.

But one of the advantages
of the field of manners, as
opposed to that of morals, is
that if you don’t get caught,
it doesn’t count. And
technology be on your side.

It is not only the smudged
purple ink that catches peo-
ple on Christmas letters, but
the depersonalized writing
style. That is, the informa-
tion included and the writing
style used are a compromise
