Beach presents The Tempest ~ Church provides care, joy Pastor Roy Page . Contributing Writer ~~ Recent surveys tell us that 84% of Canadians believe that God is alive and well. However 81% believe that church : attendance is optional. Surprisingly, many of those same Canadians would identify themselves as Christian. I say surprisingly ": because one of the core values Jesus instilled in His disciples was the blessing of community. . In Judaism God promised through ~ Moses that the tribes of Israel would be “His people,” a unique community that were called the children of Israel. In the - New Testament the term children is also applied to disciples of Jesus but now ‘identified as God’s children — members _ of His family or household, in which Jesus is our elder brother as well as being -our Lord and Saviour. =” Since Jesus really is what he taught and modelled should pro- . Surely that is fundamental to our sense of well being. This is exactly what Jesus offers, and he made it available through his unique life on this earth and the community (the church) which he established. The briefest reading of the New Testament makes clear that Jesus intend- ed his people to benefit from belonging to'a truly loving and supportive spintual “home.” It is in a caring community that we can realize our full potential as human beings, where we can experience both giving and receiving, the joy of shared success as well as the solace and ease of ‘shared. pain. Whereas other faiths may consider that theirs is a way of life rather than a religion, Christianity stresses that above all else our faith is a relationship — first and foremost with the One who saves. But the outcome of true intimacy with Him is loving relationships with and toward others. As Christians, we are sad to admit that what Jesus intended to be a relational community became regressed into a reli- gious institution. The curse of religion is that relationship i is replaced with religiosi- ty, ritual, ie and judgementalism. Many Christians have publicly apologized for acting religious instead of being rela- tional. Our religious pretense is part of the reason that 81% of Canadians do not feel inclined to participate in a Christian community (church). When all is said and done — who needs religion! But the good news is that Christians the world over are rejecting their “cultural christianity” and reclaim- ing their true faith. In the process they are rediscovering the wonder of a person- al relationship with Jesus. Every Canadian doesn’t need a church, but every Canadian will be blessed in a caring church home. A com- munity of Christians who are committed to helping each other fulfill all that God intended human beings to become. There are many excellent caring church congregations on the North Shore. Search for one and begin to experience the fulfillment and joy that Jesus promised to all those who follow him and walk in fellowship with His people. —— Pastor Roy Page writes from the Worldwide Church of God .
