=== MAIL Box A Liberal double standard Dear Editor: Recent articles in the North Shore News have chas- tised our local MLA, Jeremy Dalton, for his indiscretion in writing letters on personal mat- ters using government letter- head. Without defending Mr. Dalton’s obvious impropriety, and ignoring the merit of drawing the public’s attention to the wholesale contiscation of private land using an undis- closed “archacological reg- istry,” 1 wonder why contribu- tors to your newspaper have chosen to ignore similar indis- cretion by the Liberal party leadership. Mr. Dalton wrote three let- ters to government colleagues - Grads, go . Slower and live’ ‘Dear Editor: : Please: print this message for all ‘the parents and their » children. ‘In the past four weeks, I ‘have attended four memorial services. for four people who have : passed. into. the ‘next realm of life and death. But, | young people ave f us wondering, swers but Jon: ‘people believe - ‘that the: ‘can cheat death.or . ‘that on matters involving his family on three separate occasions. Two of the letters were written to David Zirnhelt in an attempt to cut through bureaucratic red tape so his family could proceed with development on t.eir own pri- vate land. The other fetter was written to the North Vancouver school board at the request of constituents on a matter involving a school attended by his daughter. In contrast, the provincial Liberal feadership has sent out partisan party literature at tax- Payers” expense on two sepa- rate occasions. Even though it is not clear whether Mr. Dalton knew anything about the land registry at the time, at least on the surface his notes to David Zirnhelt appear a_perfecily understandable reaction by any private citizen secking to cut through the red tape estab- lished by government's inter- ference with personal liberty. His complaints to the North Vancouver school board are similarly understandable, when it is recognized that he was asked to intervene by other parents whose children attend- ed the same school as his daughter. The Liberal party’s indiscre- tions are not so readily under- stood. The Liberal party has promised honest, open govern- ment. They have promised to protect B.C. citizens from the wasteful use of tax dollars. Yer they have expressed no regret for their improper use of public funds. Neither have they offered to repay taxpayers. Mr. Dalton expressed regret for his indiscretions, and is serving a three-month suspension from the Liberal caucus. Make r.o mistake, the cur- rent administration in the province has to be removed. The Liberal party is the obvi- ous choice of a great many vot- ers to replace the group of incompetents now in power. However, it does not serve public interest to allow those secking to serve in government to adopt such a blatant double standard. Anthony Verrall West Vancouver s ie 4 think’. a4 gown . Mayor Bell is ‘out of control’ Dear Editor: After witnessing North Vancouver District's budget debates, I can only describe the process as a “dog’s breakfast.” The pressure of an abbreviated time line, bureaucratic spin doctoring and a process that was convoluted and confusing resulted in acti- monious and divisive debate by council. Instead of addressing smarter spending in operations, the 0% tax increase was achieved by axing numerous capital projects and pillaging our Heritage Fund. If the process had been better organized and management had been given clear direction from the ‘start, much better results could have been ~ achieved. I think it’s obvious there was a lack of time and effort spent in reparing council and staff on this most i ‘imporeant issue. Considering the years of experience on such matters by our leader, one must ask why? Therefore, I question Mayor Bell’s represen- tation on not less than 12 committees of the ‘GVRD, GVTA and LMTAG all of which pay Lot decision applauded |¢ Deze Bditor: The. issue of additional parking spaces at Lions Gate Studios had me -singing Joni : Mitchell’s. lyrics, “They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot.” We may be Hollywood North "but we are not Los Angeles! our, youth, who ©" I applaud the North V Vancouver City council’s decision: to preserve the parkland and [ encour- age Mr. Lettch’ and others ai, the Lions Gate _ Studios to: tak: this opportunity to establish * incentives for employees and clients to carpool, “use transit, ; establish shuttles, and explore other rtation alternatives. . When one adds preparation time, travelling time and meeting time for 12 different commit- tees, plus the full-time responsibility of running district hall, something's going to suffer and the budget process was a prime example. Furthermore, it’s ridiculous that six council- fors are represented on only five paid commitices and that the politician who has the most experi- ence on this council, Ernie Crist, is represented on naught. Let’s share the responsibility and the remuneration. Would the mayor's dusies be better fulfilled if he didn’t belong to so many committees? Are we paying for a full- or part-time leader? Do we want district hall run by cellphone? I fear district taxpayers are being taken advan- tage. I believe it’s time for council to establish some guidelines. Our mayor is out of control.
