Getting your foot in the door and convincing hard- bitten agents and casting directors to choose you out of the hundreds of aspiring thespians they hear from every day may scem like an insurmountable hurdle. That’s where Neil Sche!l comes in. The North Vancouver resident is the director of the Actor’s Working Academy (AWA): an inten- sive training centre specializ- ing in film and television work for both new and experienced actors. Schell started the AWA in 1994, to try and help other actors avoid the frustrated efforts to get work as an on- screen actor that he once experienced himself. “When I first started act- ing in Vancouver in 1981, I did a lot of foolish things.” he says. “I went to a CBC audition with no idea what I was doing. I made it ‘through the first audition, and then when they called me back for the second audition, they took me to this big underground studio with five cameras and 20 crew. I just about died.” The AWA now concen- trates its attention on train- ing actors specifically for the utting them in front of the cameras from the word go, so they have a chance to adjust to the experience. “The camera can be real- ly imposing for you as an actor,” he says. “Bui film and TV work is what’s out there in Vancouver. The community doesn’t support theatre in the same way as a city like Seattle. Seattle’s like a baby New York.
