the answer to all Dear Editor: Re: Noel Wright's Jan. “Think small.” I have no reason to defend bigness for bigness sake, nor defend my former employer, B.C. Hydro, whose carly retirement scheme 10 years ago hung me ouc to dry, on what's now a below- poverty-line pension. But | resent the implication that my life's work in keeping everyone’s lights on has been some Kind of extravagant waste of my time and the country’s resources. Because that simply wouldn't be truce. There's a lot wrong with huge corpo- rations like Ontario Hydro (my first employer) and B.C. Hydro, but throw- ing away all they have built, or breaking it up, to be grabbed off perhaps by 18 column north shore news MAIL Box Breaking up the big boys is not “friends of the government” to use for their own profit, at the expense of those taxpayers who have created it, is not the answer. We have these 3,000-megawatt pow- erhouses and their vulnerable EHV transmission lines for a reason: that rea- son being economies of scale. And those projects produce their power usually for less cost per megawatt than any other available technology, bar none! Technology’s wonderful, ‘but it can’t perform magic. It can’t do as conveniently nor cer- tainly as economically what we're already doing with our so-called “power dinosaurs.” Mr. Wright, for example, like me, lives in a multi-tower high-rise complex here in North Vancouver. our problems The rules of our strata council, of which he is president, forbid the use of anything Nike solar pewer panels on “common patio” property patio (or my balcony) and we can’t annoy the neigh- bors with noisy gas-driven yenerators, nor are we allowed to use propanc- fuclicd appliances, because these build- ings aren't designed for adequate ventila- tion or fire hazards involved in such use. Neither can we avail ourselves of the hot-air breezes from Victoria’s legista- ture to power any wind-operated gener- ators, for similar reasons ~~ where would we put them? So, as I said to Dear Editor last week, “Lez’s not throw out the baby with the bacthwater.” We'd be sorry, P’'m sure. Ray Sutton North Vancouver Help fix North Shore health care health board on the North Dear Editor: Re: Lions Gate Hospital: There have been numerous reports, accusations and gen- eral complaining about the standards of health care on the North Shore, particularly at Lions Gate Hospital. As a long time resident of North Vancouver, both city and district, until six years ago and now in the process of moving back, I have never heard so much complaining about an issue of such public importance than I have heard about the level of service and administration of health care on the North Shore. Doctors, nurses, patients and others have been com- plaining about every conceiv- able problem arising in health care, covering their o-wn inter- ests. If these complaints are legitimate and require some type of remedy why won't all those concerned do some- thing about it? There are monthly mezt- ings of the North Shore Health Regional Board where voices can be heard, or there is always the opportunity of complaining directly to the minister of health, who is responsible for the activities of the health boards. It is obvi- ous to me that if the com- plaints are scrious enough, you do not just sit around and complain, you do something about it. On the fourth Thursday of every month, the North Shore Regional Board meets in the district. municipal hall at 7 p.m. T would suggest that if at all possible everyone with a complaint should attend that meeting and present their complaint in writing. Let the Shore know what the issues of the complaint are. Hf everyone concerned was prepared to dedicate himself to resolving the total issue of health care, it can be resolved. Take all the issues and trans- form them into an action plan thar will require answers and remedies if they are required. Let the people on the North Shore determine what health care they want, and are entitled to. “An injury to one is an injury to all.” Frank Kennedy Port Moody Shared services Save cash Dear Editor: Re: North Van District’s Shared Services Review, “Significant. cost savings acerue to each munici ality duc to economies of scale” is peppered throughout North Van District’s ‘independent review of shared services with North Vancouver City and West Vancouver. It’s tantaliz- ing to speculate how much more taxpayers would save by combining other services as well. A prime candidate should be our five North Shore libraries. The overall collee- tien of titles would be dra- matically increased. The money saved in’ combining administration costs could be used to increase operating hours and fund new book acquisitions, Personally, my mouth waters at the thought of the cost savings of amalgamating North Van City and District. Surely the time has come fora complete financial report without the political rhetoric strictly a dollars and “sense” review, I believe it is the responsi- bility of any municipal council to examine every opportunity to save the taxpayer money.
