Textile painting and dyeing is becoming popular in the ’90s because of the growing need for individuality in dressing. Maiwa Handprints, which has its original store and studio on Granville Island at 6-1666 Johnston St., recently opened a second store at 2426 Marine Dr. in West Vancouver. This shop specializes in handmade and hand-dyed clothing in natura! fibres, designed by Charlotte Kwon. Maiwa Handprints sells hand- painted and dyed vests in cotton for $59.95, and full-length revers- Designers combine fashion and art ible kimono jackets with hand- carved buttons for $110. The shop also features great T-shirts, handmade raw silk jackets and hand-dyed bolts of fabric. This firm is also well known for its workshops and classes which instruct hand-pain- ting and dying techniques on fabrics. North Vancouver textile design- er Lesley Moreside also has an ar- tistic view of fashion. This young designer creates one-of-a-kind painted silk and cotton clothes as wearable art. She draws on aspects found in nature to inspire her lively fabrics, which some- times resemble delicate gift-wrap- ping paper.
