$1.5 project to upgrade power service

¢. HYDRO plans to
double the capacity of its
main electrical cables to
Bowen Island in an attempt
to improve electrical service
to the power-outage-plagued
area.

B.C. Hydro senior communica-
tions coordinator Verne Prior said
that a change in system voltage
from 12,500 volts to 25,000 volts
will enable the Crown corporation
to serve the growing Bowen Island
power demand through existing
submarine cables.

The upgrade is scheduled fer
August or September 1992, but
Bowen Island residents snould
notice preliminary work beginning
immediately.

To prepare for the service im-
provements, most of the insulators
that suppori Bowen Island high-
voltage wires on poles and
crossarms wil] have to be upgrad-
ed. In addition, every transformer
on the island will have to be
changed to a new dual-voltage
unit.

Prior said that while most of
the insulator work can be done
without service interruption,
changing the transformers will
usually mean that customers di-
rectly served by a particular trans-
former will notice a brief inter-
ruption of less than one hour.

The new transformers will
operate at the old voltage but can
be converted to the new voltage
by simply throwing a switch.

On ‘conversion day,’ sched-
uled for sometime in September
1992, Bowen [sland power will be
shut off for about eight hours to
allow the switches on all the
transformers to be flipped.

Prior said several other
upgrades to the system on Bowen
Island have recently been com-
pleted. Among the upgrades are
new conductors installed on Dor-
man and Bowsn Bay roads.
