Drivers guilty of drinking

annoying
residents

RESIDENTS OF the Westmount
Road area are petitioning West
Vancouver District Council to
terminate the use of their
neighborhood as a new route for
the Horseshoe Bay Express buses.

Because the purpose of the ex-
press buses is to transport ferry
passengers to and from Van-
couver, such inter-municipal traf-
fic should be channeled along the
Upper Levels Highway or along
Marine Drive, submitted petitioner
Jack McConville.

The express buses would add 30
trips per weekday and 15 irips per
weekend day to the local bus
route which currently runs at 22
trips per weekday plus 12 on
Saturday.

The route, which connects the
highway area with Marine Drive
via Westmount Road, Thompson
Crescent, Mathers Avenue = and
3ist Street, includes some steep
grades that require buses to accel-
erate with a roar of their engines.

“This noise is annoying indoors
and intolerable in our gardens and
on our decks,”’ said McConville.

He added that the buses pollute
the neighborhood and pose a safe-
ty hazard on the stretches where
they pick up speed.

McConville claimed that the
addition of the express buses
would turn his area into ‘ta part
of the provincial highway system
serving traffic from the Sunshine
Coast, Vancouver Island and
Bowen Island."’

Ald. Andy Danyliu agreed that
the buses might be worrisome to
families living on the route.

“But I don't think it’s feasible
to halt the express buses defore
completing the six-month — triai
period giving us the opportunity
to monitor the situation,’’ said
Danyliu.

Ald. Pat Boname, who had al-
ready met with McConville and
other petitioners, suggested that
the residents’ concerns be passed
on to North Van _ District
Mayor Murray Dykeman who is
the chairman of the Greater Van-
couver Regional Transit Commis-
sion.
