GOOD NEWS today is that
super singer Rita MacNeil
will be in Vancouver in
March for five perfor-
mances on the stage of the
Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Tickets are not available yet,
but will be very soon. It should be
another sellout for the lady with
the big hat, big voice and even
bigger heart!...

Someone else with a pretty big
heart is North Shore realtor and
actor, Mark Howard. Mark, who
was hospitalized a few days after
Christmas with recurring em-
physema, has just been released
from Lions Gate Hospital.

Co-incidentally, while he was
recovering on the fourth floor, his
wife, Jacquiline, was admitted for
elective surgery and bedded down
on the eighth floor.

Between bouts with the medics,
the pair got together and walked
hand in hand, in their bathrobes,
along the corridors, which used to
cause some eye brow-raising
among the visitors! Love among
the patients! Tut! Tut!

Just prior to his hospital stay,
Mark had completed a role in the
locally-filming movie, Omen IV:
The Awakening. In an ironic
twist, Mark was playing the part
of a patient in a hospital!...

Interesting to see a former West

‘Vancouverite being interviewed on

CTV last Wednesday night as
Canada went to war.

Canada’s former Ambassador
to Iraq, Bob Gaynor, was being
interviewed on CTV for his in-
sights into the Iraqi situation and
pysche. His classmates at UBC
will remember him well.

Bob’s a former UBC Commerce
graduate. His dad was a CBC ex-
ecutive, and, according to West
Van businessman, Ed Keate, Bob
worked his way through university
waxing cars and washing win-
dows,

And this isn’t the first time that
he’s seen serious confrontations in
the Middle East. He was the
senior Canadian diplomat in Iraq
when our Canadian Ambassador
to Iran, Ken Taylor, was saving
U.S. lives during the Iran hostage
crisis. Bob’s still with the diplo-
matic corps in Ottawa...

John was the one-time editor of
Ed Keate's Gastown Guardian.
After working at UBC as com-
munications exec, with B.C.
Transit, and for the government's
communications office, John
moved across the water to Sooke.
He's the publisher of the weekly
Sooke Mirror newspaper.

And you could hear the com-
bination of pride, excitement and
concern in his voice as he sat in
his comfortable living room, wat-
ching live reports on CNN, from
his famous foreign correspondent
brother, Peter Arnett, who was
right in the centre of the massive
bombing raid, in a hotel in
Baghdad.

John admitted he was ‘‘damned
scared’ watching his younger
brother, but he also knew that
Peter was exactly where he wanted
to be, that he’s always had the
uncanny knack of being at the
centre of every major conflict
since Vietnam.

He was with Associated Press
for the entire Vietnam War and
stayed there even after Saigon fell.
He won the coveted Pulitzer Prize
for that effort.

He was CNN’s bureau chief in
Moscow and he covered the com-
