IF YOUR late model car begins running erratically, acting ‘‘crazy”* and then, just as suddenly, behav- ing normally, it may be suffering from an ‘‘automotive neurotic disorder.’* The new generation of vehicles have their own central nervous system of sensors and computers that communicate and_ interact within the various systems of the car. The result: a more efficient vehicle with lower exhaust emis- sions. This technology has placed greater demands on_ technicians who must diagnose and repair these vehicles. Accurate ‘‘fault diagnosis’’ often is required as a first step in the tune-up pro- cedure. Your new car will have dozens of sensors and microprocessors receiving information from fuel, ignition and cooling systems. In- stantaneously they relay data to computers which call for changes, as needed, in the vehicle’s systems. A knock (or ‘‘ping’’) sensor, for example, which literally listens for the sound of a spark knock, adjusts ignition timing to elimi- nate the cause of the knock. Fuel/air mixtures will be changed electronically to compensate for driving in high altitude (where air is thinner). When an ignition or fuel system malfunction causes excessive ex- STK#90-5170-1 $17,982* haust emissions, the oxygen sen- sor, monitoring those gases, takes corrective measures. Unfortunately, these ongoing compensations can camouflage a problem that continues to progress until, often without warning, the malfunction no longer can be cor- rected. At that point the vehicle runs poorly, if at all, warns Car Care Canada of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada. Another type of computerized corrective measure is when poor engine performance affects transmission operation. This oc- curs when the manifold vacuum sensor tells the automatic transmission to stay in a lower gear longer or to downshift sooner to lighten the load on the ailing engine. In such a situation, inaccurate diagnosis might suggest transmis- sion repairs to correct an odd shifting pattern when the real cure was a tune-up. Complicated as this may sound, accurate diagnosis is a routine procedure for the trained techni- cian working with state-of-the-art equipment. Car owners of the "90s may be less likely to understand what’s going on under the hoods of their vehicles, but recognizing the im- portance of quality tune-up ser- vices along with other maintenance procedures ensures long, trouble-free vehicle life. 190 CHEROKEE 4 DOOR 4wp | ‘STK. 790-5150 $16, 982° fee NET OF ALL PROGRAMS FREIGHT & PD! $790°NET OF ALL mnoaheus FREIGHT & PDI $790 i '90 VISTA | MICRO \ VAN 4wbDp | $14,982* "90 TALON TSi TURBO __ ie a STK #90. x $18,982 * m NET OF ALL wroctas FREIGHT & PDI $790°NET OF ALL enocravs FREIGHT & PD! $790 Guaranteed NTViE Prices Driving by visiting N.S.
