A WEST Vancouver man is
providing elaborate home
tweet homes for wild birds.

Norman Gates custom-makes
birdhouses with a difference. It all
began earlier this year when a
friend mentioned in passing that
she couldn’t find a carpenter to
construct a heated birdhouse for
the hummingbirds that resided
near her Bellevue Avenue home.

The country-loving Englishman
responded by designing and build-
ing a humdinger of a home com-
plete with heating courtesy of a
40-watt light bulb. The idea took
wing and he’s been building ever
since.

One Gates miniature cottage in-
cludes a moss-covered front proch,
preserved dry flowers, lichen
bushes. He’s even come up with a
stately Tudor beamed house com-
plete with a studded, carved oak

front door and Tudor-style
chimney.
Gates is also a poet: ‘For

robins, wrens and chickadees, that
live in houses such as these, would
never Jook at any other, for Nor-
man’s houses provide a cover.
