E NEW Woodbine inn is much the sarne as the old Woodbine Inn: an unpretentious purveyor of basic Chinese food and extraordinary neighborliness. Prior to his deaih in July 1987, Haroid Chu invested his personal warmth and profound restaurant TIMOTHY RENSHAW2 table hopping knowledge in the old Woodbine. The result was a place a lot of people calied home, which is an achievement by any measure because a lot of people don’t even call home home. It is te Mr. Chu‘s eternal credit and to the credit of the Wood- bine’s new ownership, who took over in July from the original new Woodbine owners, that the res- taurant remains a place with the casual appeal of your own living room. The new Woodbine’s interior has been upgraded since my first visit from the original combination of woodgrain walls and oddball interior knick-knacks accumulated by Mr. Chu and reflective of his personality. Its walls and tablecloths are now soft pink, and its wall hangings are restricted to subdued paintings. And the new Woadbine Inn’s menu has a far more professional look to it than its predecessor. tong Bolyestéertalt t rom. $35-$85°_/.. The New Woodbine Inn remains 2 good neighborhood dining locale for Chinese-style food. There is still the advertised Ca- nadian-Chinese cussine, which, like a roadside hazard sign on the gastronomic highway, screams: Warning, greasy food and other slumgullion ahead; sensitive stomachs use a!ternate route. However, the Chinese selectior. sampled by the family Table Hop- ping team on a recent Saturday night were rudimentary but show- ed reasonable skill and attention to culinary detail. Service, as is the Woodbine Inn trademark, came with smiles and courtesy — no extra charge. Children, as always, are wel- come. Mine were immediately treated to a simple soda and grenadine concaction by maitre d’ and res- taurant owner David Tong. The mix matched the Wood- bine’s tablecloths — indication of astute restaurant thinking and awareness of wee folk enthusiasm for spilling liquids.
