ENVIRONMENTAL MUSINGS Write on Bob Hunter OPEN LETTER TO BOB HUNTER Upon reading your column in the Sunday, Oct. 1 edition of the North Shore News regarding Ca- nadian endangered wilderness areas, I felt inspired to write and commend both you for writing the article and the News for having the unparalleled and admirable sense for employing you as a columnist. Although your articles are not always laden with resounding op- timism, you do present the harsh realities of a world in need of help. It is from journalists like yourself that we the public can learn. I believe strongly that the role of Spared tree OPEN LETTER TO BRODY DEVELOPMENT CORPORA- TION We are happy to see that at least” one of the several townhouse de- velopers on Tobruck Avenue has retained a mature tree — a large fir tree — near the sidewalk for all to enjoy. This deserves comment because it is the only mature tree left out of over 100 on the north side of Tobruck extending to the south side of i7th: Avenue. Congratula- tions, However, we are sad to see that the media is to inform its audience on the issues at hand, which your column coes. Whatever distance exists between issues, there is no dismissing the fact that we are all part of the same environment and all must help protect it. You are to be commended for your articulation and communica- tion of the idea that some things are worth saving like: Temagami, Clayquot Sound, Carmanah, the Stein and Lynn Canyon. So to you, Bob Hunter, I say, thanks for your every effort. Write on. Bev Dusseault North Vancouver endangered the fir is having a hard time surviv- ing. Surveying spikes have been nailed into it, and construction spoil is being dumped and spilled on the root system by unaware sub-contractors. Perhaps you can personally do something to rectify this until the City of North Vancouver Council passes policies pertaining to con- struction procedures to protect re- tained mature trees, as other municipalities have done. Lena Warrington Executive Director North Shore Citizens for Trees Equal coverage deserved Dear Editor: It seems that every recent issue of your paper has a story, com- plete with staged picture or photo cut, of some activity of North Vancouver City aldermen Bill Bell or Barbara Sharp. Whether this is due to pressure from the Southam chain because of their current love affair with Mike Harcourt’s party, or an in- ability of your staff and reporters WW. Shore News to recognize when they are being manipulated, I do not know. I suggest that there ere four other aldermen and a mayor whose primary concern is for the City of ‘North Vancouver, not to further their political careers, and they deserve equal coverage. The squeaking wheel may get the grease; it also gets replaced. Denald M.
