News Reporter The Mountain Village Garden Apartments Tenants’ Association has made a request to the district to appear as a delegation before council to request action on affor- dable -housing, a reduction of rental increases to conform with a 3.6 per cent Lower Mainland average, and a consideration to guarantee that a strata title desig- nation not be granted to owners. The apartment complex, located between Whitley Court and Emery Place in Lynn Valley, was pur- chased Oct. I by Mountain Village Partnership Ltd. as a result of a receiver’s sale from a Principal Group company. A number of the approximately 300 tenants, which include many single-parent families, physically and mentally- -handicapped in- dividuals and fixed-income resi- dents, received rent increase notices Sept. 30. Mountain Village resident Betty Blezard said the increases are il- legal because the tenants had either already received increases ranging from five to 10 per ‘cent within the past year or were new residents. “We think this is criminal,’’ she said. Silverman told the tenants the complex had to be upgraded and the new rates were not excessive considering current market rates.
