Children’s Garden opens
at the University of B.C.

THE FLOWERS are blooming in
UBC’s newest garden.

The Neville Scarfe Children’s
Garden officially opened yester-
day.

A cedar mural carved by Ber-
nard Kerrigan, a graduating stu-
dent of the Native Indian Teacher
Education Program, is featured in
the garden. The six-foot-square
mural will be a permanent fixture
of the wilderness section which
features native B.C. plants and
shrubs.

A joint project of UBC’s Facul-
ty of Education and the Landscape
Architecture program, the Neville
Scarfe Children’s Garden was
started as a UBC open house pro-

ject. Supported by a $3,000 grant
from the Alma Mater Society, the
garden would not have become a
reality without the hundreds of
volunteers, both from the universi-
ty and the community, who fpitch-
ed in to plan, design and build the
garden, raise funds, lend profes-
sional advice or moral support,
and donate materials of every
kind.

The garden is designed to be an
exploring and learning environ-
ment for children of all ages, anda
peaceful retreat for students, staff,
faculty and visitors to campus. It is
named after the first dean of
education, Neville Scarfe, who was
a firm believer in the value of

UBC's third-year landscape ar-
chitecture students took on the
task of designing and planning the
garden area as part of their course
work. And every one of the almost
70 students in the landscape ar-
chitecture program lent a hand in
the construction.

The Neville Scarfe Children’s
Garden is located on the west side
of the Scarfe (Faculty of Educa-
tion) Building.
