To put public suspicions and fears to rest, the minister of highways should make a public statement that construction will definitely start in March of 1983 as promised. The bridge is of vital importance for several reasoms. a ee ‘1. The recent access to and from Seymour, with its one and one-half lanes is totally adequate and could © prove disastrous in the event of a major disaster in the chemical industry in Maplewood. . a 2. The heavy rains and subsequent flooding in October of 1981 clearly demonstated thal the Dollarton Bridge ts vulnerable. Even a_ tem- porary and partial closure at the time resulted in major traffic jams and = in- convenience for the publhc and there were real fears that the bridge = support Structure might not hold. 3. A new crossing is needed if a whole number of planned developments and housing schemes are to proceed. These developments, which are part of the orderly development of Seymour, include housing in the Indian _ River. Roche .Point....Mc- Cartney Woods and Maplewood areas and are extremely important. They will create badly needed jobs and give the local con- struction industry a shot in the arm. In addition, there is the definite prospect that the Central Mortgage and Housing Corp. will proceed -wtth- a -onrayor trousing development in the Blair Rifle Range. This would create many more additional jobs. It would be nothing short of hypocnmsy and bad faith for the provincial govern- ment on one hand to “promote job creating ictoria reneging? programs” and on the other to refuse to build the crossing when hundreds of jobs and financial losses to the small business com- munity are at stake. The land agreement, which has been signed by the District of North Vancouver and the Squamish Indian Band, is now in the hands of Ottawa and its processing is expected tobe a mere for- mality. The District, in turn, -has set the moncy~aside for half the cost of the ap proaches, aS agreed . There Victoria. should not now make a public pledge that it will adhere to the original timetable to commence construction in March, 1983. The people of Seymour have put up with the in- convenience long enough and they deserve this consideration, especially when the money was set aside in the budget as long ago as the previous NDP government. Erme Cnst. Alderman North Van District Cabbie lacking manners Dear Editor: Several days before Christmas circumstances made it necessary for me to use North Shore Cab Co. | had taken my small daughter to Emergency at Lions Gate Hospital suffering severe neck and back pain. When the taxi arrived, the dnver sat motionless while | carefully manoeuvered my daughter onto the seat, after opening the door myself. Upon amving home. the driver once again watched casually from his seat as I struggled from the car. The dnver had not so much as uttered an offer of assistance, although I'm sure the idea never occurred to him. Is this general lack of manners the normal routine of cab drivers?
