B3 -Sunday News, September 21, 1980 by Andy Fraser by any chance Canada should advance in World Cup Soccer, there will probably be a last minute ground swell of support from the political sectors and also, hypocritically, from the ‘fans.’ The politicians because they always want to be near success and areas where there will be plenty of ex- posure; the “fans”, because by and large they show by their actions that they only want to back a sure thing, a winner. Some of the Canadian NS cricketers drop last players were somewhat surprised last Monday night at the smal] turnout for their full international against New Zealand. Perhaps these players who are the best this country has produced in soccer, had the whimsical idea that fans were really fans of the game who were Finish year with eight wins North Shore Cricket Club lost by five wickets to ANZA last Saturday im the last match of the season. Larry White opened the batting for North Shore and scored 16 runs in his usually steady style. Until Bill Price came in at number six, though, North Shore scored poorly. Price, however, attacked the bowling fiercly and reached 66 before being bowled by Ravi Kapoor. Bob Attalos take opener Adie, who can usually be relied on for some quickly scored runs, did just that and made twelve. Ken Bradshaw added nine, including a well hit six. Then he was caught by Gerry McGrath off Kapoor's bowling and North Shore were all out for 118. Kapoor had taken five wickets for 34 runs and Jeff Ryan took four for 28. Gary Tomsett opened for Rovers down Pegasus North Shore Attalos started their division 2a season on the night foot Sunday with a 3-1 win over North American Sport at West Point Grey. And then there was the absolute farce in Edmonton where 1,751 showed up for the international. Today in St. John's Newfoundland the Canadians will play the Irish League and it is anyone's guess as to what the support will be. MIND STRETCHING For those members of the ANZA and scored 37. Ryan, at the other end, scored 23. Both these batsmen, and Peter Ellis, who reached 22 not out, were well able to take advantage of shorter balls outside the off stump. Many runs were scored off square cuts. Bradshaw was the only North Shore bowler to turn this style of batting to his advantage. From countries where national athletes are highly thought of and supported, and where a World -Cup competition would stop everything, to our pathetic Don-support and non-caring must be the epitomy of the athletic “bends”. Of course we can’t blame those who don't attend yet claim they are soccer fans, can we? They are probably just typical Canadians who don't think that a Canadian can be any good especially where there are foreigners available. Soccer is a good example of this attitude as_ is “Canadian” football where the fans have been led to believe that the only good Canadian is one who fills those “extra” holes that have been legislated into existence. Square cuts, one by Amba Sharma and one by Doug Ede. ANZA went on to score 119 for five to win by five EVEN HOCKEY Even hockey now is turning in that direction with more and more Swedes entering the league along with other ‘European nationalities. Our inferiority complex shows at times like this and it is a shame, especially for the guys down on the field who have proven themselves to be the best im the country, and quite probably the best in North America. Yet the majority of fans who ‘‘supported’’ the Whitecaps and other teams across Canada, show their enthusiasm and support for this team by not caring a damn. There must be many, many times when the players wonder just what it is with fans. Sport has been turned into something which is strictly an entertainment for those who can sit im the stands and drink their beer, giggle and titter at cheer- leaders and only cheer ame of season wickets. During the season the first eleven won eight, lost five and drew five while the second eleven won seven and lost I1. “their” team when it is winning. GOOD FEELING Lord knows nationalism can be dangerous, and I for one am not that way in- clined, either by background or desire. But I found it an exciting and “good” feeling the other night to watch that game and to feel, even in a small way that I was par- ticipating in something that reached around the world. And it was a “good” feeling to think a bit about the background of the players for Canada. Players like Lenarduzzi, Chursky, Stojanovic, Iaruscci, along with Miller, Mitchell, McLeod and McLenaghen and the others, a background and history that covers the globe, and all playing together. But wondering all the while if anyone really cares. Fresh Tuna $4 001, also fresh Ling Cod & Red Snapper Horseshoe Bay Whart Mon. Sept. 22 noon until Tues.
