A6-Sunday News, June 29, 1980 editorial page ae NEWS VIEWPOINT Mature Mounties North Vancouver District’s acting mayor, Alderman John Lakes, and a majority of council (opposed, however, by Alderman Ernie Crist) have publicly rapped the RCMP for not taking the names of Cove Cliff School supporters at their recent demonstration. The council motion was ill-advised. The aim of the peaceful demonstration was to show how renovations to the old Burrard View School — touted as the alternative to building Cove Cliff — would slow down local traffic. About 25 demonstra- tors paraded on the highway and caused some brief slowdowns of vehicles. Recognizing the basically law-abiding nature of the demonstration, the RCMP behaved exactly as we expect them to behave in a democratic country. They warned sign- carriers against obstruction, kept them moving and generally reduced interference with traffic to a minimum. Safety was main- tained and the police reported no inconvenience to the motoring public. Provided no real breach of the involved, the right to hold such strations is an essential element of a free society. The Mounties were mature enough to recognize that cordingly.
