inquiring reporter Ellsworth Dickson The failed rescue mission of President Carter to bring back the hostages has sparked a world-wide controversy. This issue the Inquiring Reporter asks: ‘What is your reaction to the failed rescue attempt?" a Deryk McClelland North Vancouver Carter had to try and rescue the hostages. I think Carter should be more aggressive. What about the U.S. Army taking 50 Iranians hostage - what would happen then? Ed Duplissie North Vancouver It was worthwhile to try, but it should have been attempted months earlier. I don't like to see the U.S. pushed around by terrorists. I think the allies of the U.S. should support the Americans with boycotts and sanc- tions against Iran. G. Sunderland North Vancouver A lot of complications can develop in = an operation like this, and they did. I admire Carter for trying, but maybe he should have tried earlier. The Iranians are im- possible to deal with - nobody is m control of the country. Ivy Hdl Toronto, Ontario I think the rescue atlempt was crazy It's also possible that we don't know all the facts about the rescue. (Ellsworth Dickson photo) COUNCIL ‘A BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES’ North Vancouver City Alderman Stella Jo Dean won $100 Monday evening, but it was money she would much rather have lost. Council voted to reverse a earlier decision to refuse the Burrard Yacht Club per- mission to extend a barge 38 feet into City waters in order to form a breakwater to protect boats moored on its property. And while Alderman Dean said she had won $100 because she bet council would reverse its decision, she was almost in tears as she attempted to block the move. Three weeks ago City counci] refused the yacht club, which has 200 members, permission to erect the floating breakwater on the harbour headline at the foot of Geastick and Bewick Avenues, because it would partially block the view from a waterfront park on the site. On Monday council heard a delegation from the yacht club explaining that it would only be extending 38 feet into City water. G.H. Lawther explained that the yacht club had bought two barges that would act as a breakwater to protect boats and shelters from waves caused by the SeaBus. He said that since the BARGE WILL IMPEDE WATERFRONT VIEW barges were a total of 400 feet long and the yacht club frontage was only 370 feet, they wanted permission to extend into City waters. Lawther said the barges would only extend 15 feet above the water and would be made to look as pleasing as possible. All City aldermen with the exception of Dean voted in favour of rescinding an earlier decision and allowing the club to use the barges as a breakwater for the next two years. Some aldermen pointed out that council had to be reasonable because the alternative might be that the club would place the barges further out in the Inlet and TN block even more of the view from the park. A motion by Alderman Gary Payne that permission be limited to a year so that the club would be forced to find alternatives, was defeated. “This is going to be a real black day as far as I'm concerned,” Dean said. “[ just want to say I want to weep because since 1970 we have fought for water- front parks.” She said that council members were acting as “a bunch of hypocrites,” by fighting for waterfront parks and then allowing the yacht club to block the view from the park. 5 Va CO-axial V321 987-8549 powerplay speakers 1246 Lynn Vaitley Ad., North Van AM-FM STEREO CASSETTE RECEIVER We’ll bring your drive alive! - locking fastforward and rewind - balance, tone, fader - R3 road rated FM receiver complete with *249.°>! e not @nuactl as shown Also our new location 3060 West Broadway, Vancouver ve hate Ce bet ve +
