Not the one with the gyrating pelvis or the recently deposed Brian the Blarney Spinner, but the king with the big chunks of deep- fried fish and chips. For that is the brand of royalty to which plebeian Table Hopping foik are drawn. And the good King’s Fare on the second floor of this Bellevue Avenue building has remained an honest and good-quality purveyor of sturdy British-style food for the _past two years. its loyal subjects worship at the altar of simple food piled high on plates and washed down with a _ pint or perhaps, on hot nights, a hog's head of bitter-sweet ale. * They appreciate those plates ail the more when they are priced below $10 and don’t come cam- ‘ouflaged in frilly green garnishes or hoity-toity cuisine minceur. No, me chip Jovin’ lads, this is a ‘real monarch of the people. Especially those with kids and a limited budget or those with kids with a limited tolerance for fancy menus. King’s Fare was rightly being lauded for the quality of its fish and chips long before it opened its West Vancouver outlet in June 1991, - ” The operation began in Van- couver‘s Marpole area a dozen years ago. Since then it has estab- lished a sizable clientele, many of whom approach fish and chips with the kind of reverence others reserve for fine wines. King’s secret resides in its con- --sistency and its focus, which is . deep-fried fish and potatoes. *: That focus was widened some- ’ what last year, when King’s Fare Gallery exhibits innovative work THE SEYMOUR Art Gallery's Design for Living exhibit opens next week in Deep Cove. The month-long show will be chock-full of innovative creations by’ local: glassman Lawrence Ruskin, multi-media artist Barbara Cohen, furniture craftsman Francis Lemieux, Karen Firus, textile artist Barbara Head and others. The point of the show is to demonstrate that art need not only be two-dimensional or confined to walls. On display will be furniture, sculpture, glass and other media. The show runs Aug. 5-Sept. 5, NEWS photo Mike Wakotield FIT FOR KINGS... A schooner of ale and a platter of fish and chips at West Vancouver’s King's Fare restaurant. added a handful of entrees and appetizers that had nothing to do with deep-frying: Pan-Fried Garlic Prawns ($6.95); Cioppioni, a seafood and tomato stew ($11.95); a stirfry of prawns, scallops and vegetables ($11.95); Seafood Pasta ($10.95); salmon or halibut char- broiled or poached ($11.95). The new menu items were ob- viously a tip of the cook's gros bonnet to cuisines nouveau. Deep-frying, after ail, is frowned upon by medical types and other culinary killjoys. Table Hopping momentarily considered sampling the New Fare, but several platters of the King’s teal fare whistled by our table trailing the fine aromas of fish, potatoes, cooking oils and vinegars. LUNCHES for $5.95 or less And we were putty in the King’s’ deep-frying hands. Of course, we started sensibly with a King’s Fare Caesar salad, which was simply prepared with a garlic-heavy dressing and a gener- ous dusting of Parmesan cheese. A pair of fish and chip combina- tion plates followed. They included the traditional stack of french fries accompanied with a chunk of cod and a slab of halibut, both deep-fried in the King’s light, crisp batter and both fresh, firm and full of juice. Douse the above heavily with malted vinegar, splash on a side of ketchup, toss, for a moment, cau- tion to the wind and enjoy one of England's great contributions to world cookery.
