CANADIAN NAVY A history of pride CONSIDERABLE PRIDE, nostalgia and excitement has resurged since the beginning of 1985 marking the 75th Anniversary of the Canadian Navy. in the course of this full year of celebrations across the country, many in- dividuals and groups of people will perpetuate the traditions and ideals of the Navy. One of these is the Cana- dian naval aviation group which seized the opportunity to reflect a great and lasting contribution to naval opera- tions over the last 75 years. Maritime military aviation began when enemy sub- marines became capable of reaching the western Atlan- tic, making air recon- naissance an effective con- tribution to anti-submarine warfare. On September 5, 1918, Canada proclaimed the Royal Canadian Naval! Air Service. However, with the end of the Great War, Canada’s Naval Air Service endured a relatively quiet period and carried out operations such as aerial photography, fish- ery and police patrol flights. During the Second World War, Naval Air Service was assured under the Royal Navy presence in Halifax from 1940 to 1946, With the acquisition of aircfaft car- riers - HMCS Warrior, 1946-48, HMCS Magnificent 1948-57, and HMCS Bonaventure 1957-70, the Royal Canadian Navy pro- vided Canada with the viable presence of numerous naval air squadrons. The tumultuous birth and growth of naval aviation in Canada has provided ample accomplishments in the defence of Canada and her allies, especially in the close fought Battle of the Atlantic of the Second World War. By the end of the war, Canadian naval aviation demonstrated its capabilities to continue to serve in the more modern service. Canada contributed to an- ti-submarine warfare through its commitment in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. With a nucleus of skilled manpower available from the naval and aviation background, Maritime Air Group (MAG) was formed in 1975, Within its scope of responsibilities, MAG main- tains aerial surveillance and control over the sea and Arctic approaches to Canada. Of all the available air- craft to do the long range patrol CP-140 Aurora is by far the most advanced and sophisticated aircraft flown by MAG. Its multi-purpose missions such as anti-sub- marine warfare, northern patrols, fisheries surveillance and pollution control, search and rescue, ice surveillance and mapping make it the ultimate patrol aircraft to ensure sovereignty and surveillance duties. While at sea, MAG air- craft are totally committed to naval operations. The main role of MAG is to provide combat ready air- craft and crews to carry out the assigned missions which are operationally controlled by the Commander of Mari- time Command, Maritime Air Group was born out of squadrons and units which share both Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Canadian Navy heritage. Many MAG per- sonnel and their predecessors feel part of the Navy's special year and wish to reflect their pride and renewed enthusiasm in 1985, Cross-country events will bring back the memories of those who served with Naval Air. Amid the parades and reunions on the occasion of the Navy's 75th Anniver- sary, MAG will share the stage at some of the events. Commander Maritime Air Group, Brigadier-General lan Patrick says MAG will continue to be an important participant in naval opera- tions. Aside from the pro- mising future with the Aurora aircraft the ongoing programs such as Tracker aircraft update and Sea King helicopter replacement to mect the needs of the Cana- dian Patrol Frigate concept will guarantee an even greater presence in maritime operations. 19 - Wednesday, September !1, 1985 - North Shore News NEWS photo Stuart Davis CONTINUING THE spirit of the happy wanderers, George Briscoe (right) and Norman Petty (left) trek for the North Shore Christmas Bureau.
