EVERYWHERE -
Not a drop to spare

ine whole world is suffering
from an acute shortage of
clean, safe drinking water.
Increases in population,
Movement to major urban
areas, modern farming and
industrial development all
contribute to exacerbate both
the supply and the. cost of clean
drinking water. The problem is
not there is not enough waiter, it
_ isa question of distribution. In
Canada there is an abundance
of warcr from a variety of
sources including snow. run off
feeding reservoirs and wells.
’ However, some parts of the
country or even some parts of a
‘local community have water
‘Supply systems under stress
and have beccme severely
critical because of unusual
conditions. Chilliwack is a case

off parasites which they might

otherwise ingest, causing

The supply of clean drinking
water is always provided as an
economic compromise.
Contarninated water is a threat
to both short (parasites) and
long (lead) term health. A
government authority’s
position is to supply water in
which only minimum
quantities of harmful chemicals
and metals exist and to destroy
all life forms, such as bacteria
and parasites. Even so there are
still usualiy over 120
contaminates in drinking water.
No municipal authority can
afford to provide water which
is even close to 100% clean
and free of contamination. In

Families are left with a choice.

long term health threats or treat
the water so that it becomes
less contaminated and at least
palatable. It is likely that the
worsening water supply
situation will prompt perhaps
as many as 80% of the
population to filter their
