That's the idea behind the water stewardship program, developed by a team of educators and scientists. After three years of curriculum development and pilot projects in the Okanagan, the program’s resource guide, Water Stewardship: Guide for Teachers, Students and Community Groups, is available province-wide. The program was unveiled recently in Vernon by the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks. Thirty-five teachers and experts from the ministry and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans . developed and reviewed the pro- gram. More than 600 students were involved in the developmental and 1075 Marine Dr. N. Vancouver pilot phases. “The program teaches students to care for aquatic habitats and pre- serve them for future generations, not just generations of people, but all living things.” said Armstrong teacher and project coordinator Kim Fulton, “Our goal is to involve kids in stewardship of the local environ- ment, so they develop a concern and an understanding of what goes on in streams, rivers and wetlands.” The project involved several part- ners, including the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Habitat Conservation Fund, BC21, Forest Renewal BC, SFU and five Okanagan school districts. _ Workshops for teachers and com- munity groups are being presented . around the province.
