Bowen committee kept to mandate

Dear Editor:

i am writing in support of the
decision made by the Bowen
{sland Trust Committee to turn
down the massive development
proposed by the Praxis Group and
Terra Nova Enterprises as
reported on the front page of your
paper on March 22.

if the 75-berth marina, 125-
room hotel, commercial area,

18-hole golf course and 247 resi-
dential lots had all been approved
the impact on a small rural island
would have been enormous.

The Island Trust was given its
mandate, through legislation, to
“‘preserve and protect the islands’’
for the future.

It was very appropriate,
therefore, that the elected
members for Bowen Island tura
duwn a development of this

magnitude end go back to a
review of the Official Community
Plan in order to assess what kind
of development the people of
Bowen Island really want for the
island. This is democracy and we
can be thankful that it is working
so well and not bowing to urban
pressures.

Why doesn’t the SPCA
take care of cperations?

Dear Editor:

Regarding North Vancouver
District’s proposed bylaw to
double the licence fee for
unspayed or unneutered dogs, I
certainly agres people should
have this done. It makes for a
far better pet.

However, how many can af-
ford the high price
veterinarians charge for these
operations?

How much better if the local
SPCA could be set up to han-
die these operations at a lower
fee for senior citizens and peo-
ple who cannot afford the go-
ing rate. If Vancouver SPCA ©
can, why not North Van-
couver?
