Open season on speeding

Motorists looking
for high-quality
sound systems

THE OLD saying, *‘Blow your
doors off,’ used to have more
to do with a car’s muscle and
performance than its radio
(which consisted of an am
radio connected to a_ single.
small speaker in many cars).
Recent trends, however, sug-
gest that an increasing number
of motorists are looking to
their car’s sound system, as
well as its engine, for high-tech
performance.

According to audio system
experts at General Motors’
Delco Electronics division, the
current market demand is for
high-quality, factory-installed
sound systems that are specially
designed and developed for
specific car models.

This is a trend that GM has
been on top of since 1979,
when Delco Electre..cs teamed
with Bose Corporation to pro-
duce a premium, high-quality
factory-instalied sound system,
now available on nearly a
dozen GM models.

GM is now making that kind
of quality even more widely
available, with its less-expen-
sive Delco-Bose Silver sound
system, which is being offered
as an option on the 199]
Chevrolet Caprice Classic. *‘It
has two or three modifications
that take some cost out,’ says
a Delco manager, ‘‘but it still
sounds remarkably close to the
full-blown system.”’

Delco experts in the car
audio field foresee a growing
market for high-quality auto
sound systems, including new
technologies such as compact
disc (CD) players and digital
audio tape. The latter combines
the quality of CDs with the re-
cordability of cassettes. And
because North Americans
spend an increasing number of
hours in their vehicles, they
want their music, recorded
books, motivational tapes and
language lessons wherever they
go.

tuning up and ticket books being
re-stocked. The police are getting
ready for an all-out campaign
against speeding in B.C.

For the two-week period from
August 24th through September
6th, ICBC, police departments
and community traffic safety
groups will try to deliver a simple
message: ‘‘Please stop speeding
before speeding stops you.’’ The
project will be considered a huge
success by all, especially the
police, if we see both speeding
convictions and accidents drop.

If you ask any police officer, he
or she will tell you they prefer to
nail somebody with a $75 fine and
three points than mop up after an
accident. Better yet, they’d prefer
not having to issue the ticket in
the first place.

males, like to drive fast and have
(by their reckoning) perfectly good
reasons for doing so. The odd
ticket now and then is something
they and their fathers almost ex-
pect.

Girlfriends on the other hand,
have a thing about being seen in a
car pulled over by the police. And

pulled presents some difficulties.

until they have that heart-stopping
experience of a near-miss or an
officer jumping out and waving
them over to the side of the road.

Either way, catastrophic results
are much more likely than most
people realize. To illustrate, let’s
splic all B.C. motorists into two
groups.

The first group is small...they’re
the ones who have caused an ac-
cident resulting in injuries to
themselves or other people. Those
in the second, larger group have
not caused accidents.

According to a 1984 study,
