NORTH VANCOUVER 987-8020 PROUD SPONSORS OF THE FIRE SAFETY HOUSE PROGRAM Take part in province-wide fire drill MANY PEOPLE think it will never happen to them. But the figures show otherwise: last year, 7,280 fires in B.C. caused 58 deaths and 387 injuries. According to North Vancouver City Fire Department Insp. Gavin Soanes, no house- hold can afford to be without a fire escape plan. As chairman of the 1990 Plan to Get Out Alive program, he is encouraging all North Shore residents to take part in the B.C.-wide fire drill on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. At that time, all local TV and radio sta- tions will sound a 30-second fire alarm, giv- ing families and individuals the opportunity to practise their home’s fire escape plan. Children throughout the North Shore school system were given a Plan to Get Out Alive worksheet, reprinted on the back page of this newspaper feature. “Lots of people talk about a plan, but they never practise it,’’ said Soanes, noting that although a healthy 80 per cent of the local population were aware of the fire drill program last year, only 15 per cent took part in the activity. *\When the smoke alarm goes olf, you don’t want to be panicking and wondering what to do,’”’ he warned. That is, of course, assuming you’ve had the foresight to buy a smoke alarm. At only $10 and up, it may be the best investment of your life, says Soanes, and its care and feeding is simple: just supply it with a 9-volt battery once every year. Families with bedrooms on upper floors may also wish to purchase one or two col- lapsible fire escape ladders, which start at approximately $50 in department and hardware stores. They are made of either chain link or poly rope with wooden steps and are kept secured to the wall, bundled in a velcro-closure bag. All three local fire departments will be in elementary schools next week demonstrating fire safety and firefighting techniques through skits, games and truck demonstra- j KK Protection Ltd.
