MAaAILBox Bruskiewich letter was ‘tirade against Ernie Crist’ Dear Editor: The letter of Patrick Bruskiewich on the Soviet twin ci- ty, published in your paper of June 17, 1990, appears to be a persona! tirade against Ernie Crist. instead of making positive sug- gestions, he is exposing Ernie Crist’s past association with the Communist Party! Crist is elected democratically by the voters who have done so with full knowledge of his background and his opinion on major issues. Crist’s recommendation of the Soviet Far East Military Base as a twin city may be as inappropriate as Riga or Gdansk (which is a city in Poiand, not in the Soviet Union!). Both recommendations have a political bias and under- tone. The former has a transitory population base with no perma- nent cultural-heritage centre which would we could “‘exchange.”” In reference to the shooting down of Korean Airlines KAL 0G7: It was an error, a grievous mistake that the Soviets have ac- cepted. To capitalize on this his- toric tragedy sounds irrational. By the same token, selecting Riga because it is in a ‘‘non- Communist’? country in the con- text that the whole Soviet Union is becoming non-Communist lacks the perception of the current awakening in that country. We may come closer to the Latvians but not the Russians? What about the language? Do we wari to learn Latvian or Russian? To communicate properly we should make an effort to learn each other’s languages. Learning Russian opens up a much larger vista than Latvian. We, from North Vancouver District, should look to a city which meets the following criteria: It should be cosmopolitan; have a similar population base, and offer sufficient historical and cultural interests for our citizens, especial- ly our youth. As one who has lived in the Soviet Union and is familiar with the country, | would suggest a medium-sized city —~ like Rostov on Don, on the Sea of Azov, or Sevestopol, on the Black Sea, as more appropriate. Of course, the final decision will depend on the mutual interest shown by these cities, Dr. B. Dutt North Vancouver TOYOTAS NOW!
