MaILBox Helicopter laws need enforcing Open letter to District of West Vancouver Mayor Don Lanskail: I was saddened but not surprised to read in the North Shore News of the embarrassing, star-struck enthusiasm with which you and members of council approved the landing of helicopters at Park Royal Shopping Centre for the purpose of filming a motion picture. Several of us who live in the eastern part of the British Properties have been battling for some time now with Vancouver Helicopters Ltd. and others to prevent incessant overflights, many of them less than the allowable height, which disturb our neighborhood from morning till night during most summer weekends. Transport Canada supposedly regulates the mini- mum height at 1,000 feet (except for landing and takeoff) but upon investigation one soon finds that, due to lack of staff and funding and political will, they are entirely incapable of enforcing their own regulations. The City of Vancouver has authorized the heliport from which most of these flights take off and the District of North Vancouver has authorized helicopter landings on Grouse Mountain. Siace these two municipalities have authorized the flights, it seems only reasonable to me that rhe Department of Transport should order that all such flights should take place over the municipalities con- cerned and not over the Capilano Regional Park or West Vancouver. After all, but for the fact that these businesses are operated in tie air, they are nothing more than a sight-seeing/amusement ride business which would be prohibited in our neighborhood under any other cir- cumstances. For reasons never explained, the Hon. Mary Collins has declined to involve herself in this issue other than to simply pass messages to the Minister of Transport. Perhaps you and members of council will now take the time to familiarize yourselves with the problem and to do something to resolve it. Certainly, the hap- py welcome given to Vancouver Helicopters Ltd. at your recent meeting has done nothing to help. Kenacth A. Dangerfield West Vancouver Directories add to junk mail problem Dear Editor: ff readers wish to reduce their amount of junk mail and solicita- tion phone calls, send a letter to the B.C. Directories, 100 E. 4th, Vancouver, stating that ‘‘absolute- ly. under no circumstances is my name to reappear in the directory in the future.’’ Timely money-maker These people come door to door each year to check their statistical information and tell you the benefit to you is if someone from out of town is unable to find you in the phone book, he or she can go to the local library and find you through the directory there. In fact, the directories are sold to various and sundry businesses for marketing purposes. That is why we get both the junk mail and the intrusive solicitation phone calls. It is too late to be effective for this year and it will take a couple of years to stop completely, because companies use old direc- tories. But we withdrew our name four years ago and for the past couple of years, both nuisances have been reduced by approxi- mately 90 per cent. And our out- of-town friends still find us! Living in Deep Cove and having to motor along Deep Cove Road every morning with the inevitable temporary traffic delays has given me ample opportunities to ponder the possibilities that the district should, following the example set by the Vancouver Firefighters, publish a calendar of District of North Vancouver Flag Persons, Tesplendent, naturally, with the obligatory hard hat, safety vest and steel toe boots. With such winning smiles for the passing motorists I’m sure such a publication would be an annual success. R. Haggar North Vancouver DRAPERIES BY S.
