OPEN LETTER TO THE NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD As @ former student of Carson Graham, I can’t help but to feel that trustee Richard Walton is wrong in his perception of the graduating students’ trip to Los Angeles and that they will be ex- posed to all the evils of the ‘‘big city’’ (especially, as he said, ‘*...crack deals going down...’’). 7 - Wednesday, February 14, 1990 - North Shore News Mai_Box Let Carson students go to L.A. These students don’t have to spend close to $500 to see this; all they have to do is to venture down to the back streets of downtown Vancouver. Furthermore, it is costing the North Van School Board nothing for the students’ trip to L.A. The students are taking this responsi- bility. When in Grade 12, I was one of those people who was responsible for planning activities for the Students would be kept busy on trip Dear Editor: Your Jan. 17 editorial L.A. Lesson dwells on only one reason why students at Carson Graham Secondary Schoot shouldn't go on our proposed trip to Los Angeles. This point has been thought over by not only the organizers but by every parent who has given per- mission for their son/daughter to go. . Everybody I know agrees that while the trip isn’t intended to be educational, it is great supervised experience for many people who plan on travelling after graduation. Also, the trip takes place on a long weekend and will only inter- rupt one afternoon of school. Other than this one afternoon I see no reason why we should have to look for approval as there is no discount to anyone on the grounds of it being a school trip. Your editorial and earlier article left out the major point that the group is going to Disneyland and will have no time, or inclination, to laze around suntanning or sit at windows watching drug deals. You’ve portrayed the Carson grad as someone who has no inten- tion of getting good grades or go- ing on to a post-secondary school or even as having good reasoning skills. J. Kent Major Carson grad North Vancouver Discrimination is out for women’s council Dear Editor. On behalf of my executive and the members of the Vancouver Council of Women, I would like to respond to Doug Collins’ Dec. 20 column regarding the comments of a lady named Eleanor Hadley and the singing of Christmas carols. If Ms. Hadley had arrived to the meeting on time, she would have been able to enjoy an hour of taped Christmas carols, sung by Mahalia Jackson and Bing Crosby, before and during funch. The songs selected for the sing- along were merely to allow those who were not of the Christian faith to enjoy singing with the rest of the members. Our membership consists of many organizations, of all faiths, cultural races and ages and never will the Vancouver Council of Women allow any discrimination at their meetings. The motto of the Vancouver ‘Council of Women is The Golden Rule — Do unto others as ye would that they should do unto you. It was to stress this motto that songs such as White Christmas, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and the like were decid- ed upon. The executive is sorry that Ms. Hadley did not understand us, but as she does not attend our meetings on a regular basis, she is unaware of the growth of our council. However, we must point out that over the past few Christmases, we have had religious services during our Christmas meetings put on by those members who do embrace the Christian faith, and this year it was felt a change could be made to include everyone, We trust that this letter will con- firm the good will of the Vancouver Council of Women in their ac- tions. We wish Mr. Collins would take the time to research both sides of a story before making com- ments.
