UNDAY, for me, is normally a day of rest, not a day of restaurants. | usually spend mine puttering around the house during the day, then swapping good cheer with various family members during the evening. But occasionally the urge to hang around the family tree is replaced with an urge to hit the restaurant beat in Sunday even- ing’s serenity. Bearing promises of special Sunday wages, t rounded up the Table Hopping staff on a recent Sunday and directed the chauffeur to drive us to the Bridge House. The restaurant that took over from the Hobbit House and its heavy Middle Earth cuisine in 1988 has, under the guidance of manager Lutz Wolff, developed a solid culinary reputation on the North Shore and beyond. Silverguard ST all-season radials have computer designed tread pattern for year-round driving. 1°° Sears reg My first visit to the restaurant early in 1988 left me with an ex- tremely positive impression. The Bridge tlouse has been on my list of above-average North Shore res- taurants ever since. Its menu has changed somewhat since then. But the Sridge House still focuses on an ever-popular mid-European cuisine that em- phasizes heavy but elegant red meat dishes such as Rack of Lamb ($16.50), Chateau Briand for two ($36) and Steak Tartare ($15.50). There are also fish and poultry dishes on the menu (Salmon Well- ington, $14.50, Fraser Valley Duck store: Timmins ‘Warranty detads in store . 1.99 Tire Sears Reg. But the biggest departure from the restaurant’s previous menu and from standard menu fare is the Bridge House's revival of a dish straight from Switzerland and decades past: fondues. They enjoyed a brief flowering in the early ‘70s, leaving in their wake countless fondue kits now collecting dust on kitchen shelves and memories of burned lips from novice fonduists. But the cook-at-your-table con- cept was also a good social ice breaker and provided a sophisticated return to communal SAVE 20% With 2 full width steel belts, polyester casing, 80,000 km wear- out warranty’, road hazard warr.t SEARS DieHard” XL battery has a 66 month warranty? and 24 month free replacement warranty’. The Bridge House provides a fondue in appetizer (Cheese, $7.95), entree (Chicken and Beef, $13.25 and $14.25, respectively) and dessert (Chocolate for Two, $10) menu categories. So, for the avid fondude or fon- dudette, the restaurant is sure to have a fondue for all occasions. The Bridge House, dressed con- vincingly as an old-time ginger- bread house during the recent festive season, occupies one of the homiest restaurant buildings on the North Shore. Built in the mid-1920s across from the Capilano Suspension Bridge, the grand old log house provides an extremely warm at- mosphere in which to dispatch the damp chill of any fall or winter evening, be that a Sunday or any other evening. To that end, Table Hopping opened with a 1987 Beaujolais \ wang, aor! Day'O by permission of Lord Burgess Music Pub. Co. wine and an ideal refreshment to dispatch around the Bridge House fireplace. A sampled Orange, Cucumber and Almond Salad ($3.50) was very good. Hts fancy lettuce came topped with sliced yellow pepper, fresh orange slices and an interesting cream dressing that included diil and sliced roasted almonds. We also sampled an order of Smoked B.C. Salmon ($6.50) that looked interesting but was some- what disappointing. Raw white onion rings and capers abounded, but the salmon itself was average and somewhat dry.
