14 - Sunday, March 19, 1989 - North Shore News Video shows a hit at LGH THE NEW hit show with Lions Gate Hospital’s maternity patients is Channel 35 -- the in-house tele- vision channel dedicated to educa- tional programs for new mothers and their families. The first four offerings of the new channel include 20-minute videos on new baby care, new mother care, post-natal exercises and a two-part program on the reasons for infant crying and how to respond. The programs are broadcast free several times a day. The first two programs are Americai and the last two are Canadian. The maternity ward was chosen to launch the hospital’s patient education programming because its patient population is healthy, in- terested and eager for information, says LGH director of Education Services Jean Blake. The video programs supplement the individual and group teaching performed by the maternity nurses and physiotherapists who have also developed pamphlets on breastfeeding and post-natal exer- cises that reinforce the informa- tion. “‘New mothers on the matermity ward have a very busy schedule,” says Rosemary Tindale, maternity head nurse. “They are in hospital only three or four days now and breastfeeding and baby care such as bathing the baby as well as one-to-one teaching. With the video programs available several times a day, the new mother can go over the information as often as she wishes. Under consideration for inclu- sion in the maternity channel pro- gramming are videos on breastfeeding, premature babies and infant behavior. LGH's patient programming was made possible by a recent con- tract with Sterivision whereby the company that rents bedside televi- sion service to patients also makes available three free channels for educational purposes. In addition to the channel dedicated to maternity informa- tion, one channel will be used for staff education and one for general patient education throughout the hospital. ‘‘We have capacity to present the educational information now and we're working on previewing materials,’’ says Blake. ‘Videos are reviewed by doctors, nurses, and other related health profes- sionals.
