Know how to care
for your evergreen

EVERGREENS ARE probably the

most important plunts in your
landscaping plan.
When deciduous trees and

shrubs have dropped their leaves in
the fall, evergreens continue to
relieve the starkness of the winter
landscape.

All year round,
interest of varied
shades of color. They provide
privacy screens, muffle sounds
and, properly placed, act as wind-
breaks, helping to minimize heat
loss from our homes during bitter
winters.

Many times we have heard or
read advice to feed evergreens only
in easly spring — no later than the
end of May. This is supposed to
give new growth, encouraged by
the feeding, time to mature and
‘*harden”’ before winter.

This is a fallacy. While the plant
is making new top growth, it is
also creating a more extensive root
system. If the new foliage is killed
or damaged in winter, the new
roots are not, but remain to help
the plant produce even more vig-
orous growth in the following spr-
ing.

It is entirely practical to feed
evergreens until a month or six

they offer the
textures and

weeks before the first expected
frost. Remember to keep watering
them until the soil is frozen; they
need to absorb all the water they
can, since once the ground is
frozen the water will no longer be
available to them.

If some of your plants are fre-
quently injured by winter winds,
consider using an anti-desiccant.
This is a coating, sprayed on,
which seals the needles or scales of
an evergreen, to minimize moisture
loss.

Evergreens are acid-loving
plants. They must have acidic soil
— or amendments to maintain the
acidity — or they may be subject
to “yellow anemia’’ (Chlorosis)
which can, if ignored, become
fatal. It can be caused by improper
soil acidity, serious iron deficiency
ora lack of proper plant nutrition.

One of the most important fac-
tors in proper nutrition is to ensure
the availability of chelated iron.
(Chelation is a complicated organic
chemical process which converts
iron into a form which can be ab-
sorbed by plants through their
roots and foliage.)

fects — cannot be ignored, but
must be attended to. Application
of a water soluble fertilizer both to
the soil and to the foliage, can
quickly overcome any winter dam-
age suffered by your evergreens.
